Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Slow Is Fast: On the Road at Home [With Poster and DVD]

Perfect for the bike tourer, surfer, adventure, and farmer, or all & none of the above, Slow is Fast is a moving mini-documentary on exploring your own back yard off the beaten path. Combining an excellent soundtrack with beautiful moving pictures and interviews from real people, doing real work, three prominent names from the surf community have produced a reminder for the world that a simpler life pursuing passion over finances is the life worth living. A moving poem from a farmer sums up this tiny work of art and is rounded out by humor, a near-nervous-sounding narrator, and a ton of inspiring landscapes in both the book and DVD. Our hosts remind us to slow down and appreciate. To listen to good music and feel the spirit that rises out of it. To tell stories. We are reminded, while looking through these pictures, to live true to ourselves, to reconnect with our planet, and embrace the notion of being a kindred spirit.

California Surf Project

An exceptional photographic essay on some of the west coast's best surf spots, secret or not, narrated in an understandable, humble demeanor. Don't let this be categorized as a "coffee table book", as it is so much more. Any outdoorsperson, surfer, sailor, or adventurer would take this book to heart. Worth every penny, I promise.
