Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Untold
by

Courtney Collins is a risk-taker, and in this case it was a risk worth taking. This is an action-packed adventure about a bad girl named Jessie (and who does not like a bad girl) as she tries to survive a harsh life in the Australian outback. Jessie’s story is filled with betrayal and death, but you have to admire her struggle to overcome the hand life has given her. Jessie’s story is gripped with intensity that will keep you reading. Ms. Collins takes a huge risk by narrating this story from the viewpoint of Jessie’s dead baby. It is macabre and sometimes outright creepy but somehow it works to build a bond with Jessie that would have been lost otherwise and it makes this book stand out from similar stories. This is a piece of extraordinary storytelling.

Sea Inside
by
Philip Hoare

I love the ocean. In another life I would have been a marine biologist, so when I saw this book, I had to read it. Hoare is a great writer - how he describes the ocean and different species that live there, or near there - including extinct species. He made me want to sail around the world. But the book is not just about the physical sea - it is about the connectivity of all things. How we connect to the earth, to the sea, to everything. The Sea Inside made me long for the ocean and weep for the destruction that humans have brought to it (and to all nature).

60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Portland (5th Edition)

This is a great resource if you live near Portland or are visiting and looking for a good reference guide. I appreciate how it lists out trails that are kid friendly. I have pulled it out many times for a weekend road trip. My only issue with the book is that there are a couple of hikes that are farther out than 60 miles.

Foretelling

A young girl named Rain, born in an Amazonian women's tribe as a product of the rape of her mother - the Queen, faces many challenges and life changing decisions as she grows into a women. Does she take her rightful place as the future queen? Does she defy everything she has been taught and show mercy to her enemy? This book leaves you looking at the choices you have made in your life. I would recommend this coming of age book for older teens. There is rape, war, orgies and death during childbirth that may be difficult subjects for young girls.
