Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Vacationers

Just finished THE VACATIONERS, taking a break from THE BONE CLOCKS. Where that title is intricately complicated and fascinating, THE VACATIONERS is straightforward and simple, easy reading for just-before-bed or at the beach or waiting for the dentist. Each chapter is a day in the holiday of the Post family, Jim and Frannie, and their children Sylvia and Bobby, PLUS Bobbie's girlfriend Carmen, and a gay couple, Lawrence and Charles. Their rental house on Majorca sounds idyllic with pool and nearby sights, but their lives are far from relaxed. We are drawn in as they work out their differences and frustrations, to a satisfactory conclusion. Not that the ending is pat, but now I am ready to return to THE BONE CLOCKS.

Sisterland
by
Curtis Sittenfeld

As a twin, I was drawn to this book, even though I am sororal, not identical. These sisters reminded me somewhat of my sister and me, as I am married with three children living the suburban domestic life, while she remained unmarried, lived downtown and played the field. No psychic emanations between us as with Violet and Kate, or premonitions of the future, but I loved the closeness, however fraught, between the two and their relationship with their family. More exciting than Sittenfeld's last book, a pseudo-biography of Laura Bush, and set in St. Louis, the centre of attention in these racially charged days!
