Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Appetite for Life

I knew very little about Julia Child the person before reading this book. It reads like a novel. Her life was amazing, outside of her culinary celebrity. You don't even have to like Julia to enjoy it, but you almost certainly will once you're done. Great read.

Tea With The Black Dragon: Black Dragon 1

I rediscovered this on a visit to Powell's. It's an endearingly quirky book, not quite fantasy. A woman receives a plane ticket from her secretive daughter, flies to San Francisco, and meets a Chinese American scholar with secrets of his own. Finding this book was like reconnecting with an old friend.

Art Of Eating
by
M F K Fisher

M.F.K. Fisher is the original foodie. Her sumptuous prose is as much a feast as the ones she describes, and as she says, to write about food is to write about human hungers. Hemingway said she was the best writer of their age. But completely different ~ with a wit and an eye for detail unequalled by the rest. Pick up your favourite thing to eat, pour a cuppa, and enjoy. It's that good.

The Warmth Of Other Suns: The Epic Story Of America's Great Migration
by
Isabel Wilkerson

I thought I knew African American history, but this book opened my eyes to so much: the disparity in income that results from financial losses sustained by African Americans fleeing the South; the incredible brutality of everyday life... It's a wonderful, mesmerising book. Reads more like an epic novel than non-fiction.

Richard Louv

Every parent, teacher and school admin should read this. So should the rest of America. Louv makes an eloquent case for why America's children are victims of Nature Deficit Disorder. He convinced me ~

The Riddle-Master Of Hed: Riddle-Master 1

Over the years I've read a library's worth of fantasy. This remains one of my all-time favourites. All the characters are vividly realised, and the story is compelling and deeply satisfying. Not too 'pretty,' but w/ that edge of darkness that makes a world real.
