This was a choice of my book club--I voted against it. I never thought that the physical, pratfall comedy of Lucy was that great, and am not a fan of the show. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading her story (another reason to join a book club--I am often surprised at how much I enjoyed books that I would NEVER have read on my own). I loved the background of her childhood--those were interesting times. And she was one determined young women--continuing to work at anything to make it as an actress. I also admired her work ethic and loved learning how Lela Roger, Ginger's mother, mentored so many young actors at RKO--that kind of gem of information was very interesting. And that she decided not to publish this--she finished writing it in 1964--but it was published it posthumously by her children also made it more interesting.

Love & Ordinary Creatures

There were many things to like about this book. The writing was beautifully descriptive, full of vocabulary, and an attractive setting. And I like animals"I have enjoyed many books where the narrator is an animal"although this was not a first person narrative (maybe that was the problem"the omniscience of the narration speaking for and about the bird was not as believable as if the bird had been the narrator) . But anyway, Caruso didn’t quite grab me. I rarely like stories of jealousy, and this bird had it in spades. I did like that Caruso recognized his love situation was comparable to that of his first owner’s unrequited love. However, it felt a little uneven"Caruso would resolve that he was not suited for Clarissa, and then still respond with jealous action, and then the pattern would repeat. The philosophizing and then actions, although paralleling his first owner, just didn’t mesh for me. And of course, the ending was somehow out of line with the rest of the book. The lack of certainly regading Caruso’s fate seemed unsuited for the love story and previous straightforwardness--that Caruso wouldn’t be part of a happy ending was disappointing. (Of course, now that I’m thinking about it, the ending of poor Matilda should have given me a clue that the story could go any direction.) I give it a 5 of 10 for the writing quality. But unless you like love stories that are unhappy, give it a pass.

My book club read this book--made for excellent discussion on making decisions, rights and wrongs, and moral dilemmas. Highly recommend for a group read.

One Book One San Diego selection for 2014-15. Very much enjoyed these stories--these are the first Filipino immigrant stories I've read. I would read the first story last--I feel like the context for that story would be better if it weren't first. But other than that, a very good read.
