Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

We Are Never Meeting in Real Life: Essays
by
Samantha Irby

I am SO glad to have discovered this book AND, by extension, Samantha Irby, and her blog, "bitches gotta' eat." The title of this book and Irby's essay style are exactly what I am looking for in a good read--plus, I totally dig the cover of this book. Am sure it is going to be a laugh-riot, from cover to cover! Thanks for highlighting this book in The Daily Dose!

Autumn
by
Ali Smith

I cannot wait to check out this book. Just the title, "Autumn," takes me to places in my own memory (notably, when I was growing up back east where "Autumn" actually occurred; since moving west nearly fifteen years ago, the days of four seasons are no more). Moreover, though, the description that the book is set in the "Trump and Brexit present," grabs my attention. I believe we all "lost" so much during the last political fight (a fight which continues to the present day), and it takes a lot out of one emotionally and spiritually. In such times, "what we choose to remember" is even more important, and more indicative of that which we miss most, in our world and in our individual lives. Really looking forward to reading "Autumn" and thanking you for your review!

Trip to Echo Spring On Writers & Drinking
by
Olivia Laing

I am only now learning of this title, thanks to Charles Baxter's blog/commentary, "Writers and the Bottle." Being, as I am, a fan of all the writers he mentioned who are included in The Trip to Echo Spring, and having taken so completely now to Mr. Baxter, himself, whose work I was also not familiar with prior to my reading the Wednesday, Feb. 04, 2015 PowellsBooks News via e-mail, I know already this will be a book I am buying in hard copy as I will be highlighting and notating like crazy! Very glad to have been introduced to this book. While I am buying the hard copy, I could not resist downloading a sample via my Kindle, just to get a taste of this work!

Just Mercy
by
Bryan Stevenson

As a legal professional for nearly twenty years, currently working at Homeless Services Authority, this book is now at the top of my "must read" list for 2015--perhaps for all time. As committed as I have been, and for as long as I have been so, to the mission of The Innocence Project, I am sure this is a book that will resonate with me. The line in the review that reads: "...Injustice is easy not to notice when it affects people different from ourselves; that helps explain the obliviousness of our own generation to inequity today," is so very much at the heart of this problem. I cannot wait to read "Just Mercy," and am hoping many will pick up this read and come to realize the "nobility of the cause" for which Mr. Stevenson is advocating. Thank you for your review and offering of this book!

You & Me
by
Padgett Powell
barbarawilliams35
, October 22, 2014
I saw this book promoted on Powell's Daily e-mail and downloaded a sample to my Kindle. Those two old guys talking are a hoot, and how. As importantly, though, I was also turned on to Padgett Powell's "The Interrogative Mood"--what a funny, trippy ride that one is! AMAZING talent on the part of Powell, to have nothing but questions, what ifs, how nows? As well, I was also referred to other similar authors: Lydia Davis, Nicholson Baker, which led to more terrific samples. In short, one book reads to another! Thank you for this great recommendation!

I have yet to read Lampedusa, but just that title and the review on Powell's website has me planning to buy it! Looking forward to reading many of his works.
