Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

MAD About Trump A Brilliant Look at Our Brainless President
by
Mad Magazine
Shannon Drury
, July 03, 2017
If there is a silver lining to the political and cultural mess that America is in right now, it's that MAD magazine can make tons of money skewering the Cheeto-in-Chief. And while we're on the subject of Cheetos, one of the funniest bits in this book by far was "The Startling Similarities and Differences Between Donald Trump and Burger King's Mac & Cheetos." An easy shot, perhaps, but a very satisfying one--it kept my seventeen-year-old Instagramming for days. Trump is also compared to the Beast in "Beauty and the Beast," Pope Francis, and a bus station bathroom, but the less said about that last one the better. As always, MAD's writers are sharpest when they are using Trump in combination with other pop culture references, as the Simpsons-themed 2016 election guide "The Shifty & Batsh*t Show" (full disclosure: I voted for Shifty and would do it again in a heartbeat). The only drawback to this collection is having to gaze at that bloated, orange face on every page--if only Trums, advertised as "the only antacid designed to fight heartburn caused by the presidency of Donald Trump," were real! Thank you to NetGalley for the ebook preview copy.

We Are Never Meeting in Real Life: Essays
by
Samantha Irby
Shannon Drury
, May 25, 2017
I knew Samantha Irby was funny, but I didn’t know she could make me weep with laughter until I read the opening essay in this collection, in which she details the many reasons why "The Bachelorette" needs her crass, disabled, depressed, TV-obsessed presence to liven up their tired franchise. Even when writing about chronic illness, death, and the nightmare cat from hell, Irby keeps her self-deprecating humor intact. While I’m accustomed to Irby’s stream of consciousness style, the book could have benefited from additional editing to remove repeated anecdotes. Still, this is one of the funniest and most honest essay collections I’ve read in years. I hear that the brains behind “Broad City” are developing a show based on Irby’s confessional writings; get this book and say you knew Samantha Irby before the rest of your friends.

Why We March Signs of Protest & Hope
by
Artisan
Shannon Drury
, March 16, 2017
This fabulous book is a must-have for anyone who participated in women's marches all over the world. I marched Washington with a million pink pussy-hatted friends, and I was deeply moved by how uniquely funny, thoughtful, and inspiring all of the signage was. This march, unlike others I've attended, was grassroots, homemade, DIY, and the signs show it. Some were made quickly, with a marker and cardboard; some are elaborate works of art. All are heartfelt and beautiful. Best of all? All royalties from the book will be donated to Planned Parenthood. This would be the perfect gift for the friend who marched with you or for the many others who marched in spirit. I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley.

Pain Woman Takes Your Keys, and Other Essays from a Nervous System
by
Sonya Huber
Shannon Drury
, March 16, 2017
I always love Sonya Huber's writing--poetic, witty, sardonic, wise. With this book, she's your Virgil as she takes takes you into the nine (or more) circles of chronic pain. As the back cover copy advises, this is not simply a personal memoir of pain, but an exploration of pain as a medical experience, as a feminist issue, as a family member, as a poem, as a political act. It should be read by patients, doctors, and....everyone else.

by
Jaime Hernandez

I didn't think I could love Jaime Hernandez and Maggie any more....until I read "The Love Bunglers." It's a masterpiece by an artist and writer who's only getting better with time.
