Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Constant Heart

I loved this story. I read it while I was intertwined in a similar relationship to the one in the book, with a person who had found me again after decades apart. *The Constant Heart* captured so much of the confusion and wonder that I felt in that relationship, the kind that comes from having been touched by someone at a very particular time in our development. It captured, in simplest terms, the way our first loves stay with us the way they do, and made all the confusion and impossibility of that situation feel like it would be okay. It's a beautiful book.

An Untamed State
by
Roxane Gay

This is one of those books that I haven't been able to put down even though I read it months ago. It's a wrenching story that stays with you long after you've finished; it's the best story about the human spirit and human condition that I've ever read. The beauty of Gay's language is at odds with the ugliness inherent in so much of the story she tells -- I can't say that you will be happy after you've read it, but everyone should read it. There are books that will stay with you the rest of your life, and "An Untamed State" is at the top of that list.
