Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Cutting for Stone

Abraham Verghese

Abraham Verghese created a world of medicine, ethics, extended family, class differences, and Ethiopian history that affected me more than any other book I read this year. Apparently a lot is based on his own upbringing in Ethiopia. I loved the twists and turns of his characters' relationships and their dedication to learning. This is a wise and deep story, one that still haunts and inspires me months after putting it down.

Kafka On The Shore
by
Haruki Murakami and Philip Gabriel

All of Haruki Murakami's books inspire me, because his view of the world is different from any other writer. A Windup Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore are my two favorites, because he has created unique and parallel worlds in both that captivated me. In Kafka on the Shore, the complexity of the plot, the lovely and bizarre details about the characters, and the travel through Japan were unlike any other book I've read. Murakami's insights about Japan's history and cats are fascinating. A year ago I got to hear Murakami speak in Berkeley, and his presence confirmed his place as one of my favorite authors ever.
