Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Genius Plague
by

On my annual pilgrimage to Portland and Powell's I found "The Genius Plague" while cruising the shelves. Being a biologist I found the concept of a fungal takeover of the human race curious and David Walton's writing heightened my thinking from curiosity to plausibility. This book is the missing link between present society and future distopian society!

Borne

I bought Borne because it was a title that kept popping up in the Top 5 Staff Picks of 2017. I wasn't disappointed! The story was complex yet based on simple emotions of love, dependency, and sacrifice, all set in a future dystopian society. I was a tiny bit disappointed that the end was so easy and gentle, a fairytale ending to a harsh reality. The Bestiary was an added bonus!

Anansi Boys
by
Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is a superb writer, intelligent without being overbearing. I have read two other of his books (Good Omens with Terry Pratchett and American Gods) and loved them, but this one is my favorite! I haven't come across a book I want to reread in a long time and I'm already anxious to read Anansi Boys again and I haven't even finished it! If you're stuck in a genre rut, you NEED to read Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman.
