Lolita
by
Vladimir Nabokov

As someone who likes to consider themselves an avid reader, I am almost constantly reading. That being said, I often read books that are easily forgotten. This book was not one of them. Lolita, a novel written by Vladimir Nabokov, details the life of Humbert Humbert, a literary scholar, with an disturbing obsession for younger girls. Within the first few chapters of this novel, I was both horrified and astounded by Humbert's antics. It also became very clear that he was not, in fact, a reliable narrator. After making this discovery I started to realize just how demented and dark this novel is. Nabokov's writing style is very unique and made this a story that was very hard to put down. This novel gives the reader the chance to peer inside Humbert's mind and see what he is really thinking whether the reader wants to or not. Humbert is a very persusive man and at times, as embarrassed as I am to say this, made me pity him and take his side. If it were up to me, I would have everyone I know read this devastating yet powerful novel. Congratulations Nabokov, your novel changed the way I think about things.

Joy Luck Club
by
Amy Tan

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan is the story of four Chinese woman and the relationships they have with their daughters. The woman, though more commonly referred to as "aunts", were all raised with traditional Chinese beliefs while their daughters were raised to be "all American". Throughout the story, you delve further into both the mothers and daughters pasts and see how strained some of their relationships are with one another. As someone who is not very fond of Tan's other novels, I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Though it is rather slow at some parts and can be confusing trying to keep up with some of the Chinese words that get casually thrown in, it does a very good job at portraying Chinese culture and has a beautiful message of trying to remember what's important in life. Each chapter is a different characters story and the further you get into the novel, the more you start to see everything get pieced together. The story has beautiful, and almost poetic, style of writing and Tan does a rather good job of character development and timing. Overall, I would give this story a 4/5 and I strongly recommend that others read it as well.

This Is Where I Leave You
by

A very well-written book about Judd Altman and his estranged family when his father dies. His father's last dying wish was that the family gets together to sit Shiva, a seven day period used to mourn the recently departed. This book was both hilarious and heartbreaking, I recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.
