Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Gift of Caring Saving Our Parents from the Perils of Modern Healthcare
by
Marcy Cottrell Houle, Elizabeth Eckstrom
Andee Zomerman
, August 28, 2015
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Everyone needs a copy - whether you have aging parents or you plan on becoming an aging parent. My own parents cared for my grandparents; one with Alzheimers and the other with dementia. The hell Marcy went through is similar to the hell my own parents went through. Marcy had written down everything she's learned and grabs you into her story so that no one has to go through this hell alone. She tells us all of the mistakes that may have been avoided if she'd had "lingo" doctors respond to. She tells us what signs to watch for when a parent "slips up" a time or two. Most importantly - she shares with us the "perils of modern healthcare" - and what we need to know as advocates for our aging parents. Dr. Eckstrom's advice throughout the book is invaluable, written in layman's terms, this will be the reference I will continuously be grabbing when I have a question. This should be required reading for every first year medical student. I think throughout a med student's education, empathy can be lost. This story can be a reminder to the pain on the other side of the patient. Houle and Eckstrom live right here in Powell's territory and while the advice is for elderly caregiving everywhere, it's interesting as a Portlander to find out what is happening in my own city. We need to know what is happening in Geriatric care. God willing, we'll all be old enough to need it someday.

Grand Paradox The Messiness Of Life The Mystery Of God & The Necessity Of Faith
by
Ken Wytsma
Andee Zomerman
, January 27, 2015
Every so often a book is so well written and applicable to my life, I wish I could have it committed to memory. The Grand Paradox is full of lessons I needed to learn and re-learn. The Christian faith means something different to each individual, it seems. We've figured out a way to make everything about God personal - as if He exists for us rather than the other way around. Wytsma challenges me to not ask what God's will is FOR my life, but instead ask God how I can serve Him WITH my life. Reading The Grand Paradox changed my way of thinking. It lessoned the pressure of always wondering "Am I doing the right thing? The wrong thing? Which way do I go, God?" and instead to walk forward in faith and trust. I am thankful to have this book in my personal library. I'll need it for reference more than once, I'm sure.
