Esther Yi: The Writers That Haunt Me: Esther Yi’s Bookshelf for 'Y/N' (0 comment)
I’m haunted by a handful of writers all long dead. They set the standard; naturally I fail. Anything I read of theirs promptly enters my bloodstream, whereupon mysterious internal fomentation proceeds. Y/N is simply the latest extrusion, a concerted one...

Annihilation (Southern Reach Trilogy #1) by Jeff Vandermeer
    Lizzie, June 10, 2018
I was wary of this book, because it's outside of the genres I usually stick to, but it was beautiful and terrifying. I couldn't put it down! Vandemeer creates a lush world that is also unsettling to the core. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Of Orcas & Men by David Neiwert
    Lizzie, June 10, 2018
This book was accessible, thought-provoking, and highly informative! Especially as a resident of the Pacific Northwest, I am taking a critical look at my behaviors and how I can change them to make a positive impact on our environment, oceans, salmon, and thus, orcas. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a passing interest in whales. David Neiwert takes scientific studies and relates them in a way that is easily accessible to his audience. I have a newfound respect for these whales thanks to this book!

Let the Dead Speak: A Maeve Kerrigan Mystery by Jane Casey
    Lizzie, April 03, 2017
As with every Jane Casey thriller, I could not put this down! Casey touched on some topical issues and wrote a compelling mystery that left me guessing until the end. I was hoping for more of the story to focus on Maeve's personal life but I guess we'll have to wait for the next book to find out what happens there.

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith
    Lizzie, November 03, 2015
Career of Evil was everything I'd hoped it would be and more. Robert Galbraith, aka JK Rowling, gives us a clever and deeply disturbing mystery that kept me hooked; I couldn't put this book down! We also get more backstory for Robin Ellacott, which ties in very well to the plot line of this installment and to choices she's made in the previous books. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book! I would definitely recommend this book to all of my friends.

    The Burning by Jane Casey
    Lizzie, July 08, 2015
I've been looking for a new crime series for summer reading and was thrilled that a friend recommended this to me. The Burning held my attention; I couldn't put it down! Maeve is a fresh face in the world of crime novels, and I really can't wait to get to the rest of the series. The mystery was chilling and unexpected. I loved this and can't wait to read the rest of Casey's books.

    Reckoning by Jane Casey
    Lizzie, July 08, 2015
Wow, what a great continuation from The Burning! Maeve continues to be a relatable character, and the mysteries are dark and gripping. I couldn't put this down and I am so excited to read the rest of the series!

Last Night in Montreal by Emily St John Mandel
    Lizzie, June 02, 2015
What a beautiful, heartbreaking story. I found the Lilia to be extremely relatable, and I had to keep reading to find out where her path went. I would recommend this to any of my friends.

The Year Of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
    Lizzie, May 04, 2015
Ny heart broke for Joan Didion and all she went through during such a short span but I loved this memoir. Didion imparts a lot of wisdom to her readers about cherishing time left with family as she grieves the loss of her husband. I would recommend this book to anyone but with the warning that it's not a light read.

    Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
    Lizzie, April 22, 2015
I love this book, and I return to it again and again. Following the legend of Vlad the Impaler, the reader goes on a tour of Europe on the hunt for Dracula's tomb. I love that the vampire hunters are academics, searching through documents, maps, and libraries. This is not a vampire love story; it is well-crafted thriller, filled with European lore.

In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O'Brien
    Lizzie, March 19, 2015
Tim O'Brien writes a haunting account of the investigation of a missing woman, a politician's wife. Flashing back to John Wade's time as a combat soldier in Vietnam, O'Brien explores the lasting effects of PTSD and the familial pressures placed on men; emotionally, professionally, and physically. Hearing both the present and past voices, the reader is left to draw their own conclusions about what happened to Kathy.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
    Lizzie, March 18, 2015
The Girl on the Train explores the relationships between women and the men who lie to them while weaving through a murder mystery. Intriguing characters and a chilling plot line make for a gripping read. Paula Hawkins' debut thriller will definitely keep you on the edge all the way through the last page.
