Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

How the Other Half Ate: A History of Working-Class Meals at the Turn of the Century Volume 48
by
Katherine Leonard Turner

I first encountered this book at the library while simultaneously looking into the history of my working class house (built in 1906); and my casual interest quickly grew as I read the succinct and engaging descriptions of what was normal for ordinary families a century ago. Turner takes the dry, biased information gathered by Progressive social workers and reinterprets it from a modern perspective while helpfully connecting the dots that would only be noticed by a professional historian. The numerous and detailed fresh photographs add deeply to her historical survey. I particularly appreciated her conclusions in the last chapter which wryly point out that the corporate money-driven circumstances that dictated what the less affluent ate way back then (and the catch-22 shaming of women) really isn't any different today, despite so much industrialization and progress. I began this book as a casual escapist historical read from the library, but now consider it worthy of owning - particularly in such tumultuous cultural times that greatly impact the food options for immigrants/refugees/those living hand-to-mouth.

Nourishing Broth An Old Fashioned Remedy for the Modern World

Excellent explanation about the science and details of making bone broth. Includes curated recipes from many others as well as the author. This book takes the details of bone broth far beyond what can be found in Nourishing Traditions and NT Baby & Child Care. I'm about to purchase it as a gift for my mother who was amazed at the rich and deep flavors of the long-simmered bone broths I've made.
