, January 07, 2016
"Going Dark" is an excellent conclusion to the outstanding "The Red" trilogy. Linda Nagata continues her deft combination of hard SF ideas with military SF thriller action. The result is another great, gripping, and memorable read - one of the very best of the year.

The Trials
by

The Trials continues the story of James Shelley as he discovers that resuming his former life is not an option. He continues to move away from what he was toward an end he cannot see, in the interest of the Red - friendly, indifferent, or hostile though that interest might be. A sure sense of storytelling and inexhaustible imagination make The Trials a great science fiction novel and a great read.

Red First Light Book 1
by
Linda Nagata

, September 17, 2015
The Red: First Light is a near-future, high-tech novel about James Shelley, a soldier who finds himself at the nexus of major changes brought on by technology and economics - changes he doesn't understand but just has to live through along with everyone else. This is a smart book. The techie stuff is utterly cool and a bit scary and the action sequences are absolutely intense, but just as fascinating is the book's focus on the big question: what triggers those thoughts that chase one another through Shelley's mind, and if they aren't his, whose are they? Linda Nagata is a veteran science fiction writer working here at the top of her form. The Red: First Light began a trilogy. Its sequel, The Trials, appeared during the summer of 2015, and the finale, Going Dark, is due out in a couple of months.
