Love & Other Consolation Prizes
by
Jamie Ford
Joanne H
, April 30, 2018
As with Jamie’s two previous books, Love and Other Consolation Prizes is beautifully written and to be savored word by word. It’s the kind of story you want to not end. Ford’s characters jump out of the pages and become real people telling their stories. I love the history interwoven with this captivating love story between Maisie, Earnest and Fahn. Ford clearly did extensive research into the history of Seattle at the time of the Alaskan Yukon Pacific Exposition as well as during the return of the World’s Fair in the 1960’s. The story builds around the truth of a Chinese boy raffled off at the 1909 fair and the love story that bloomed over the years. I hope Jamie is getting another book written for us soon. I have to say he is my favorite contemporary writer.

Sourdough
by
Robin Sloan

Love Love Love Robin Sloan’s writing - I didn’t know how he could top Mr Pennumbra’s 24 Hour Book Store but he did! Sourdough is of the same quirky style that just sucks you into the plot in a way like no other. Sloan’s imaginative tales take you on quite the adventure. His attention to detail and creative descriptions put you right there in the story. When Lois starts baking her bread you’ll feel like you’re right there with her delighting in the wonderful texture and smell. You’ll smell the starter- the slight banana aroma - when she bicycles thru the streets of San Francisco you’ll be right there with her - you’ll experience the unique Marrow Market - the smells, the exotic flavors. The plot is quirky and crazy but so believable!!!

The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration Into the Wonder of Consciousness
by
Sy Montgomery

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. I think it is probably one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read. The author's writing style engaged me immediately. Her experiences with the octopus is fascinating and very touching - I can't wait to read another of her books. Sometimes nonfiction can be dry - not so here! The "relationships" she builds with these amazing creatures are very beautifully described. I didn't want this book to end!!!

Mr Mercedes: The Bill Hodges Trilogy #1
by
Stephen King
Joanne H
, March 09, 2016
I listened to the audio and was riveted to it start to finish. A lot of raw and gory descriptions you'd expect of a Stephen King novel. Keeps you on the edge of your seat as the plot builds and it gets into all the psychological transformation of a psycho killer. The sad thing is this is the type of thing that could happen in any city anywhere in the world. As far as writing style, of course it's excellent - only Stephen King can do what he does when it comes to horror....and just when you can't think it can be any more horrendous, well then - it is!!!
