Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Blue Sword

Robin McKinley is one of my favourite writers, and this was the first book that I read by her. I was immediately captivated by Harry, and that hasn't changed on subsequent rereads. I love her strength, loyalty, and stubbornness. Be sure to read the prequel too, which I also highly recommend. PS: McKinley has never written a bad book. Go ahead, read them all!)

Someone Knows My Name

This is one of those books that stay with you long after you've read it. Aminata is a character you'll cry with and cheer for. Hill is incredible at evoking the feeling of places, whether it be Africa, South Carolina, Nova Scotia, or London (and all the places in between). The characters live on the page -- they don't seem stock, ever. It's been made as a TV movie, which aired on BET.

People Could Fly American Black Folktales

In the tradition of enslaved Africans, tales were told to teach children the way of things, as well as to impart traditional lore. Gathered here are tales that will be new to most people. An absolutely delightful addition to the more well known tales of Brer Rabbit.

Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom
by

A really good companion for a rigid-heddle loom weaver. The section on trouble-shooting is worth its weight in gold. For the most part, her instructions are very clear, with step-by-step instructions. I wish her section on clasped-weft weaving had been as clear on how one *starts* the darn thing! The pictures show the weaving already in progress. Even if you have other rigid-heddle weaving books, I recommend this one highly.
