Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. All the Pretty Horses

What an amazing book. I don't know how it could have been better. The way the sections of the book flow from one to the next is so natural and perfect and while the action continues right where it left off, you really get the sense that an act has concluded and a new act has begun. It's so much fun to read such a well written novel.

Midnights Children
by
Salman Rushdie
Shaw Millerman
, January 01, 2010
Midnight's Children is everything you could ever want in a novel, a story, a myth or a bible. It's magical and epic, sweet and evil, raw and finely honed. It resonates on so many levels, makes you stop and put it down and marvel at the life Rushdie has so richly infused into the written word. The book is a pure pleasure to absorb and linger over, the way the words themselves seem to walk on water. It is obvious, Rushdie is harnessing something far bigger than himself but at times he lets his ego through and it is not the great thing in him but that ugly ego that takes over the words. Rushdie is so great though that even if the entire novel was composed of those few, less than perfect moments, Midnight’s Children would still be the best novel of the last ten years, if not one of the best stories ever.
