Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Hag Seed

Hag Seed is a delight, whether or not one is familiar with Shakespeare's The Tempest. I happened to listen to the audiobook with a reader who brought great personality to each "actor" at the Fletcher County Correctional Institute where a a deposed theatre director teaches a literacy class by putting on a yearly play. Now to find out this book is part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project where authors are encouraged to re-tell Shakespeare's plays in novel form is exciting! I'd seen the film Prospero's Books and watched a live performance of The Tempest at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival yet now I fully understand the story and deeply enjoyed the heck out of this telling of it, with its humor, readable flow, character backstories and a modern setting in Ontario, Canada.

The Sellout

As a group from work met as white folks to talk about Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, a colleague followed up with an email about "The Sellout": "For me a good book is self-care. If you have not read The Sellout by Paul Beatty do so. I have almost finished reading it and am amazed by it." Of course, now this book is at the top of my reading list.
