Patient H.M.: A Story of Memory, Madness, and Family Secrets
by

A fascinating tale about mental illness and the journey to find a treatment. The unique perspective of the author comes from being the grandson of the doctor who pioneered the lobotomy procedure performed on the patient known as H.M. His grandmother also suffered from mental illness, spending time committed in a mental institution, subjected to brutal treatments that were tantamount to torture. H.M. suffered from seizures and it was hoped the procedure would allieviate them. Unfortunately, his brain was damaged and his memory went away. H.M. no longer remembered more than mintes into the past. His condition allowed him and his brain to become the most studied. In some ways, his amnesia saved him from remembering his infamy. A great read and a must for those who study mental illness, memory or the brain.

Patient H.M.: A Story of Memory, Madness, and Family Secrets

This book was a pleasant surprise. I went in expecting a story revolving around the famous patient. I was mesmerised from page 1 with the personal snapshots of the doctor and was can be seen as his motivation, his with (the author's grandmother. It weaves back and forth in time, in the history of the procedures, and the players in the race to map the brain. I was both entranced and sickened by the justification of the ethical violations doctors, researchers, and psychologists made in this journey. The level of writing in refreshingly above average, but understandable for the layperson. The author is a skilled writer worth reading. I passed it on to one of my doctors, who will pass it along to another.

Great book for anyone entering accounting field; although it is strongly recommended to purchase the study guides as well. For those who need information on the basics, buy the publisher's Accounting Principals as well for reference.
