Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Buckminster Fuller Poet of Geometry Written & Ilustrated by Cole Gerst

Like many people Gerst interviewed, I had little to no understanding of who Buckminster Fuller was, or the extraordinary theories he released into society. This book not only tells you about "Bucky's" live in great detail, but also lays out in layman's terms, the complex thoughts of this creative man. One thing that I love about this book is the illustrations that Gerst provides. I am a very visual learner, so seeing pictures in such detail really helped me grasps Fuller's concepts. Wonderfully written book about an extremely intelligent and creative man who wont be forgotten.

Tall Trees of Tokyo
by

Matt Wagner sure has a way of capturing all angles of a culture. I have learned this through reading the other two Tall Trees books, and now in this one, though it seems I went a little bit out of order. Wagner explains that the Tall Trees title comes from an old Japanese proverb that warns people not to tact out or stray for the norm, except for Wagner, as well as many of the artists within the book, this seems more like a challenge rather than a warning. This book includes very unique and stunning artwork from many different artists. My favorite part of this book, besides looking at all of the art work,is seeing the Japanese writing, then reading what it translates too. I think that this is a cool way to remind us that this art is from a different culture and place, but the people are just like everyone else.
