Wonderfully diverse! I can't think of any other book set in WW2 with a female pilot in the book. I love books that feature females in a prominent place during a war. The characters were very vivid and while some of the scenes were difficult to read, each one was very important to the plot and to the development of the characters. The author's note at the end was very eye opening to the fact that women still are not getting credit for their roles during the war, aside from the work they did at home.

I Am Forbidden

I absolutely love Jewish fiction. This was one of the better ones I've read. I had such a wonderful time following the characters around and watching the changes in their lives. The character development was strong and I wish there was a sequel. Mila showed a resilience that few characters I've come across show while it still being believable. This story takes from Romania to Paris to New York. If you want a beautiful book to read on an afternoon, you should pick up I am forbidden.

Zookeepers Wife A War Story
by
Ackerman, Diane

Wow. This book was amazing. I enjoyed it so much. The characters are wonderful and it shed a light on a story I never knew. Most people who grew up Jewish, Christian or in any community closely resembling Judaism was told stories about the Righteous Gentiles who helped saved the Jewish people during the war. Though I have heard countless stories about people who were saved, I had never heard about the Zoo Keepers. I read this book after finding out it was based on a true story. The family showed amazing bravery as well as the 300+ Jewish people who stayed with them. This book was very well written and very well researched. (I researched the story further before reading the book.) The author did a wonderful job being truthful as well as delicate dealing with such a difficult time in human history. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys anything historical, but be warned you may want to have a box of tissues close by.

Unorthodox The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots
by
Deborah Feldman

I love reading about people in other cultures and other ways of life. I read this book in one day. I loved it. I am unfamiliar with the sect of Orthodox Judaism that Feldman was raised in. I am more familiar with other sects. The sect she came from is VERY different form the ones I am familiar with. This was such an eyeopening and heart wrenching story. Feldman proved herself to be a strong woman even when it was difficult. If you are looking for a story about a woman over coming adversity and standing on her own, I encourage you to pick this one up.

Exodus
by
Deborah Feldman

I picked this up after having read Feldman's first book. I couldn't put her first book down! This is her second book and is her life after she left her community. She describes going to Europe to trace her Grandmothers history and she guides the reader along. She also guides us on her adventures across America and the various people she met and was/is friends with. Exodus was not a "shocking" as Unorthodox was but it was still a good book. If you've read her first book and want to know what Feldman has been up to since leaving, pick this one up.

This was the third book of Fisher's I've read. (all have been non-fiction) This was my least favorite so far. I didn't find it nearly as funny as WISHFUL DRINKING. A lot of this one dealt with her relationship with her father. Which from what she tells seems to have been no the best of relationships. She opens up a lot in this one about ECT. I was included in the group she talks about being "most people" I too only knew what the movies show about ECT. If you are an avid fan of Fisher's then pick this up, if you're not an avid fan, skip it and pick up WISHFUL DRINKING it's much funnier.

Rebbe The Life & Teachings of Menachem M Schneerson the Most Influential Rabbi in Modern History

One need not be Chabad to enjoy this book and learn from it. The Rebbe OBM was truly a force to be reckoned with. He did so much for the Jewish people and I learned even more about him in the book that was very well researched and very well put together. The Rebbe had a heart for helping the Jewish people and was a very well educated man. Many outside the Jewish community have never heard of him but it's worth picking up this book to learn about a truly unique man who even in death has countless followers.

Wishful Drinking
by
Fisher, Carrie

Can we just take a moment and recognize the genius of Carrie Fisher? This was the second book of hers I've read and I loved it as much as the first one I read. She has the same wit and sharp honesty in this book as with the other one I read. She's open, honest and real in the book. I think there are somethings in her book that the average person can relate to but of course growing up in Hollywood very very few people will be able to relate to that. Fisher even mentioned that in her book how even when she was growing up very few kids knew what she was going through having super star parents. The audiobook version is the one I had. Fisher is the narrator which is just amazing! Who else better to read the story then Carrie Fisher herself, the woman who lived it. If you are a fan of hers you should read this one.

Troublemaker Surviving Hollywood & Scientology

I read this book in one evening. I enjoyed it. I really liked how the author told a little about her time on The King of Queens and a few other shows I never knew she was in. I went into this book knowing nothing about the religion. I was a bit confused on a few of the terms she used with the religion. She talks about climbing the bridge or leveling up on the bridge. That was really confusing. But, I don't think being confused about a small part of the religion hindered my enjoyment of the book. I felt bad for the author when she described how hard it was to leave and the people who turned on her due to her decision to leave the religion. One thing I loved about it the most is how unapologetic she is in the book. She basically stands up and says "This is me and my story if you don't like it. I don't care." It was a very powerful book and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about the religion and why she chose to leave.

The Princess Diarist

Carrie Fisher

To set the scene: I work nights. I listen to audiobooks at night at work. Carrie Fisher is not an author to listen to if you want to be productive at work. I was laughing so hard I think my co-workers were afraid for me. So many times during this book I was laughing so hard I was crying. Carrie Fisher is a hilarious author! She opens herself up in this book and tells a lot of personal things, she admits that there was a lot of the diaries she kept that she omitted from this book, and rightly so. She deserves her privacy. She uses a "devil may care" approach to telling her story and the sharp wit is beyond anything I have ever read. This was a very short book. (The audio edition is just over 5 hours) it's a book I would read over and over. You'll laugh and you will cry as Carrie Fisher is your guide through a very fun and somewhat hard time in her life.

Laughing All the Way to the Mosque The Misadventures of a Muslim Woman
by

This was a fun read. I'm not Muslim and am not super familiar with the laws of the religion so I'm sure I missed out on some of the book. The author had a fun light humorous voice and it felt like having a cup of tea or coffee with an old friend. There were some moments when I was sad for the author, but over all I thought it was a very fun read and I did learn a few things about Muslim law and religion that I did not know before. I am much more familiar with Jewish law and customs. I did find however that this is an author that I would buy again without knowing anything about the book. She has a real talent for the written word. If you want to learn more about a different culture or religion pick this one up.
