Luna & Me: The True Story of a Girl Who Lived in a Tree to Save a Forest
by
Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw
Allie M.
, June 27, 2018
Any nature loving kid will be amazed by this true story of how a young activist saves an ancient redwood tree. It shows how anything is possible with a strong will and the help of others. This picture book is great for young kids and there is also more detailed information at the end of the book for older kids and adults. This story is empowering and the author has a very gentle way of telling it that's appropriate for little ones. We highly recommend this book!

The Immortalists
by
Chloe Benjamin

Would you want to know the date of your death? I've wondered this from time to time myself but never explored the idea as much as Benjamin does in this book. I could not put it down, it was a very thrilling story line, following the lives of four siblings that have sought out the prophecy of their death and it affects their lives a great deal although it is not always clear how they interpret this. It was definitely an exciting premise and I very much enjoyed how the plot played out over many years.

How to Be an Elephant
by
Katherine Roy
Allie M.
, January 09, 2018
Katherine Roy is an amazing artist and beautifully narrates this non-fiction story in a way that captivates the audience. Roy puts an incredible amount of research into her books and even went on a trip to Kenya to research migrating elephants. She accurately portrays the Africa's landscape and her passion for these incredible animals is definitely contagious!

Breathe Like a Bear

My kids really enjoy this book! We have explored a few other mindfulness books for children and this is the most fun. Some of the exercises are great for during daytime as well, not just when reading bedtime stories. Adults will enjoy the guided meditations as well!

Swallowing Mercury
by
Wioletta Greg

, October 10, 2017
After reading the interview with Greg on the Powell's blog I wanted to find out more about the author's life and perspective. Greg's brevity quickly draws the reader in to her childhood in Poland during the communist regime. Her amazing recollection of detail enriches the story and makes her experiences very moving. She was able to reflect honestly on time of great adversity and also find beauty in unexpected places.

Blobfish Throws a Party
by
Miranda Paul, Maggie Caton

This book makes the whole family laugh. It's a great book for any blobfish enthusiast. My kids love hearing about how the blobfish was recently discovered near Australia and quickly rose to fame for having such a unique look! This book is uplifting after what starts out as a sad situation when guests don't show up to a party at the bottom of the ocean. The illustrations are very fun and full of conversation starters.

In the Country We Love: My Family Divided (Updated with New Material)
by
Diane Guerrero and Michelle Burford
Allie M.
, September 30, 2017
This book was truly eye opening. We hear a lot about immigration policies in political discourse, but to read a first hand account of how a loving family was literally ripped apart is much more meaningful. Guerrero overcame a great deal of adversity and I admire how she persevered and is using her experience to highlight why immigration reform is needed.

This is an excellent early chapter book for young readers. It was funny, suspenseful and appropriate for the 4 year old age range. My daughter enjoyed pointing out little details and I was impressed by how engaged she was with the book. I hope there is a sequel soon!

The Happiest Kids in the World: How Dutch Parents Help Their Kids (and Themselves) by Doing Less
by
Rina Mae Acosta and Michele Hutchison

, September 27, 2017
This was a great read for any parent. We constantly worry about our kids which is why the message of this book, which is just to relax, was so refreshing. Trusting our children enough to let go and let do the real work of childhood, which is to play can be challenging at times but yet it is also the most natural thing in world. After finishing this book I immediately picked it up again and reread it from start to finish. There is so much we can learn from other cultures!

Unstoppable My Life So Far
by
Maria Sharapova, Rich Cohen
Allie M.
, September 25, 2017
A very interesting look into the person behind the persona. In an age when public figures share more than ever before we get a glimpse into Maria's life that feels intimate and raw. I was amazed by her journey and I hope that she continues to open up and let her guard down. There is a very good lesson in persevering after life knocks you down and I was very moved by it.

I'll See You in Paris
by
Michelle Gable

, September 23, 2017
Based on the real life of Duchess Gladys Spencer-Churchill this book reads like a historical mystery. I love the beautiful way in which the author connects the lives of women separated by time. There is a common thread of love throughout and the pace of the book is fun and exciting, I couldn't put it down!

Shark Lady The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Oceans Most Fearless Scientist
by
Jess Keating, Marta Alvarez Miguens

, September 20, 2017
My daughter loves adores book. It has lovely illustrations and shows sharks from a different perspective than most children's books. Eugenie Clark is an amazing role model for young girls and a fearless female who challenged what the scientific community knew about sharks in her time. Highly recommend for all children!

Landslide reminds us that often there is struggle beneath the surface. This is a swift read that lends an interesting perspective on religion and the fragile yet unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters.

An excellent read. Each chapter is more interesting than the last and it feels as if you are as familiar with the Italian culture as the author. Highly recommend!
