Wolves of Eternity

More chilled out than its predecessor, The Morning Star, and even more engrossing. I loved The Morning Star and would suggest beginning there since this is a cycle of novels that will eventually connect. Where The Morning Star is apocalyptic and devilishly scary, The Wolves of Eternity is reflective and moves at a slower, more expansive pace. The first 400 pages take place in Norway, 1986. They follow Syvert, a young Norwegian man who has just returned home from the military to care for his mother and younger brother. He finds a bunch of letters written in Russian to his now deceased father and has them translated. The letters eventually connect him to Alevtina, a Russian biology professor in the present day. She has studied forests, and the relationship between fungi and trees. Her early days of research are detailed in flashbacks as she travels to study the forest as a living organism. Questions about eternity, science, nature, and modern technology swirl around her story. When everything comes together towards the end, it is breathtaking in scope. Mythical, philosophical, epic. Don't miss The Wolves of Eternity!

Billy Collins is THE poet of my lifetime. His words have brought me comfort, sorrow and joy in equal measure. I cherish his words. This collection of poetry is invaluable! Bravo!
