Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Speaking as an engineer going on 36 years of experience, this book will launch, or has already launched many technical papers on the fine mechanisms and gizmos which are made very apparent here of this animal/flying machine. And when we look at these images in this book, they suggest that the human race knows not so much about flying as we think we do. As a technical photographer, the black and white images of the electron microscope are stunning. The depth of field is, like, really deep... Like, really awesome! As a struggling pencil sketch artist looking for a worthy subject to draw, well... Just stunning. As a beekeeper, this book proves that these creatures are fascinating at every level, from macro to micro, to full scale.. This is one of the 6-7 books I have as reference for my beekeeping efforts.

Liquid Gold: The Lore and Logic of Using Urine to Grow Plants

This little book is informative. When the USA is having eutrophication issues with major bodies of water like Lake Erie, and we here in Seattle had a massive sewage spill this spring due to heavy rains, this book shows us several ways to reduce the amount of liquids going to treatment plants and also generate a great (and free) fertilizer product for your garden. The book is well written and treats the subject that some might find off-putting in a fun and informative way. There is some good and strange bits of history here too.
