A Dangerous Legacy
by
Elizabeth Camden
Seasons of Opportunities

I enjoyed this book tremendously. I had never read any books by Elizabeth prior to this one, so I was so glad to find another author that I like. The main character, Lucy, was headstrong and determined, and yet I found it so awesome that she learned a valuable life lesson in the end. She learned to treasure each day, and enjoy it; to find joy in the simple things, and that sometimes, the fight is not really worth it. The ending brought much satisfaction, although was a bit unexpected. I also enjoyed, Colin's character too. Although at times, he seemed a bit of a jerk, then he was a hero. It kind of fluctuated, but I liked the way the author drew me in with that. I was really hoping for the best to come out in him. I think he too learned a valuable lesson about life. Nick was another one of my favorite characters too! Of course there were plenty of those you would love to hate, especially for me was the psychotic doctor... He still gives me the Heebie-jeebies, and makes my skin crawl a bit. Getting locked up in a mental institution is not my version of fun. Overall, this book is an enjoyable read; mysterious, with an element of faith, a little romance, some humor, and I even learned some pretty neat stuff about news and telegraphs. I received a copy of this book from Bethany house. I was not asked or required to review positively. All opinions are my own.

If We Make It Home: A Novel of Faith and Survival in the Oregon Wilderness
by
Christina Suzann Nelson
Seasons of Opportunities

This book grabbed me from the beginning. It starts with a chapter each, about three different women, who roomed together in college, and now 25 years later, they are getting ready to go to the Emery House reunion, although all a bit reluctantly. Their lives are very dissimilar, and yet, not so unalike. Each woman is trying to escape her own inner struggles - empty nest, marriage problems, career difficulties... They head off to their college reunion, in hopes of maybe finding themselves and the glue that kept them together - Hope. But Hope has died, and life is now looking even more hopeless. They haven't kept in touch these past 25 years like they should have, and their comradeship is not what it used to be. Each anxious for the weekend to be over, but not sure what they will do next. Individually, they each decide to take a survival trip to the mountains, not knowing the others will be going too. Can they get along long enough to survive? And yet, have enough "alone" time to figure out their lives? Not too far in, the story took a totally random twist! I was seriously not expecting that! I could hardly put the book down in anticipation of finding out what was going to happen next. As I got deeper in, the twists kept happening. This is truly a book of survival, not just physical, but spiritual, a survival of the soul. These woman have to learn not only to depend on each other, but to depend on God, and figure out what they are really living for. I thought it was inspirational! There is just a bit of confusion at times, because the book is written in first person, with each character telling it from her point of view, so it is important to really pay attention to who is speaking at the time. That's probably the only draw back. I was blessed with a copy of this book courtesy of Kregel Publication. I was not asked or required to review positive and all opinions are my very own.

These Healing Hills

This was such a beautiful story. Although it started out with a vaguely familiar feel, and I kept saying to myself, "it seems like I have read this before or seen this somewhere", it didn't end that way. Once the first chapter was through, the story took on its own makeup. The characters were wonderful and I felt like I was there right in the center of it all. Maybe because I live in the hills, I was able to picture the book in a realistic way. Of course, it was set a little further back in time. :-) I fell in love with the families, especially the Locke family and Granny Em. I loved the courage of the frontier nurses, especially Nurse Howard. The story focuses mostly on her, and she stands out above the rest, not just for her courage but for her willingness to love people and get involved in their lives at their level. She accepted who they were, where they were from, and wasn't there to change them, instead she was there to help them. Of course a little hint of romance between her and Ben, doesn't hurt the plot. Another favorite character for me was Sarge, the faithful snake killing Collie. I would highly recommend this book! I received my copy courtesy of Revell. I was not required in any way to review positively and all opinions are my own.

CSB Reader's Bible, Gray Cloth Over Board
by
Csb Bibles by Holman

I love this Bible. The cover is fabric over board with simple pattern on front, very nicely done, comes in a box case, also fabric covered. When I first opened this Bible, I wasn't sure what to think, I had never seen one without like this before. It was kind of weird with no chapters, or verses marked off, although you can tell where the chapters begin by a bold letter. After taking time to read some of it, however, I was amazed at how easily it flowed. With no separation of verses, and nothing else to distract, it's smooth sailing. It very simple, but flows naturally in an easy to understand text. I would highly recommend this for its readability. I am not really familiar with the Christian Standard version, never having read it before, but I looked up several key passages and they seemed close to the version I usually read from. I look forward to reading through this Bible in the future. I was blessed with a copy of this Bible courtesy of B&H Publishers. I was under no obligation to review positively.
