Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. American Dialogue The Founders & Us
by
Joseph J Ellis
Jan
, November 16, 2018
A brilliant review of the main questions that preoccupied the Founding Fathers (race/slavery, government, and the role of America in the world) and how this has played out in modern times. The most engaging book I have read in a long time.

Odyssey
by
Homer and Emily Wilson
Jan
, January 19, 2018
I was determined to read this book for all the wrong reasons. The Odyssey is perhaps the most famous poem of all times, and I wanted to have read it rather than wanting to read it. I envisioned heavy language and plenty of work, and its over 500 pages certainly looked intimidating. Yet, once I got started, I was mightily surprised. It is a wonderful story and Emily Wilson’s translation has turned it into a wonderful read. Besides, as I was soon reminded, pages of verse turn faster than pages of prose. So, go for it! Like me, you will be glad that you did.

Friends Divided John Adams & Thomas Jefferson
by
Gordon S Wood
Jan
, December 15, 2017
A fascinating account of Jefferson’s and Adam’s personal interactions, as well as the political ideas and concerns of the time. The two men were each other’s opposites socioeconomically, temperamentally, ideologically and, most interesting, psychologically. To say that each was unique in his own way is a polite understatement; the word eccentric is more appropriate. Yet, destiny brought them together to share the duties of nation building. Gordon Wood tells the story, with all its twists and turns, in a most captivating way.

The Variety of Life: A Survey and a Celebration of all the Creatures that Have Ever Lived
by
Colin Tudge
Jan
, October 18, 2017
Colin Tudge is a wonderful writer on nature and the biological sciences. In this and his many other books - The Tree, for example - he shares his wide and deep knowledge in an entertaining and highly accessible way. Thus, far from being dry and “academic”, his books may be described as page-turners. Certainly, at over 600 pages, The Variety of Life may look intimidating. But excellent illustrations and informative charts break up the text into easily manageable chunks. Besides, with a scope as wide as all life on Earth, there is a whole lot to cover. Warmly recommended.
