Indian Voices: Listening to Native Americans
by
Alison Owings

Indian Voices made me laugh as if I was in a joyful party with friends. It made me cry as when I said goodbye to my dearest friend. It made me dream as when I was a 7 year old discovering the beauty of a magnificent forest and its fauna. Indian voices was written for ALL of us it seems to me, and first and foremost perhaps, to awaken our spirit. It also cuts through the chase of big social data and speaks to all those, whether with a religious conviction or without one, who have a political consciousness or an acute awareness of the extent of the historical dimension of social injustice perpetrated by European descendants on our entire American continent and the Pacific Islands. Indian Voices, is perhaps a living US-specific sequel to Eduardo Galeano's Open veins of Latin America. The Conclusion is edifying in some many ways. Alison, please keep writing, your contribution is paramount.

Healing Through The Dark Emotions The Wisdom Of Grief Fear & Despair
by
Miriam Greenspan

, November 16, 2018
This is one of the MOST helpful books on the subject I have read. I was able to incorporate immediately the useful tools it contains and move on and embrace life. Miriam Greenspan speaks from experience, a gut wrenching one in fact. She also gives an honest, ethical and compassionate perspective on the many implications of the lack of attention to grief in our western culture. The few theoretical considerations she presents all support the development of the book. Her work differs from other publications that I have read in that it does not carry the self-help tones that some of us consider cheap or watered down. She speaks with the eloquence of a poet, the authority of a clinician, a historian and an anthropologist, without just "repeating stuff" that may be taken as common knowledge without proof, as too many other "self-help-make-a-quick-buck-get-famous" writers often do. This book helped me grow towards acceptance, understand others and myself better and live a deeper, more harmonious life. The author kindly and promptly replied via e-mail to a question I had regarding the content; my question was: "why is anger not addressed?" I found my answer nonetheless. Highly recommended; a must read; always within reach on my bookshelf.

Beyond Belief: Agnostic Musings for 12 Step Life
by
Joe C

, March 20, 2018
Ideal daily reader (because a total and non-antagonistic) substitute to church and/or religion. Excellent complement to 12 steps recovery process for those of us having difficulty with the god language inherent to the 12 steps literature composed 75 years ago... This is my second time reading a few pages of this book on an (almost) daily basis. Before, it's as if I was trying to climb the Everest without a guide. It helped me transform my outlook on life's (and recovery language's) challenges. Now I take my (very open minded) Sherpa with me everywhere I go. Looking back, I realize that nightly or early morning reading of these pages provide me serenity, insights and perspectives that are extremely reassuring and always relevant to life's situations. The book opens the door for conversations with people of different (or opposed) convictions, perhaps even with bigots... Therefore also a perfect gift for anyone, theist, agnostic or atheist, anywhere, anytime. Indispensable.
