Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Cat That Changed My Life 50 Cats Talk
by

This is not a kiddy book. This is not for the fainthearted. This IS a tell-all, reveal-all, no-holds-barred book of candid confessions by cats. By candid I mean X-rated in some spots. Sardonic, Sarcastic, sweet and cynical. Read it. Enjoy it. Savor it. Wonder at the depth of Feline comprehension and daring. Afterwards, you may find yourself fur-tively looking over your shoulder, should you hear the pitty-pat of little paws (I'm assuming you have a cat or two), and you will ever-more regard your cats with a deeper understanding and perhaps a little apprehension ("they know about THAT??!!!") My cats are watching me as I write this. I must stop and leave the room.

Skeletons on the Zahara A True Story of Survival
by

A painstakingly researched and excellently written narrative of an early 19th century shipwreck (of a boat sailing from the US), upon the coast of Africa -- and the subsequent kidnapping of the crew members who were brutally used as slaves on a camel train trekking through the desert. The captured men endured starvation and severe dehydration, but carried on with the determination to be eventually freed -- even in the midst of their agonies -- through a brilliant but extremely hazardous ploy used by the captain of the ship, which was put to the test, after their arduous and painful journey ended.
