Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Almost Everything: Notes on Hope
by
Anne Lamott
Anne W
, October 30, 2018
I am not a Christian. However, I consider Anne Lamott one my favorite personal pastors - my sometimes foulmouthed, funny, personal, Evangelical Christian pastor. And yes, I have a small handful of pastors, Lutheran, Catholic, Buddhist,...But again and again, Anne's words bring me back down-to-earth from my maelstrom, capable of living in this world with some equanimity,... with, in fact, Hope. And I'm a better, more effective change agent when I have hope. So, I have not read this one yet, but how could it possibly fail to be anything but another act of kindness by Anne Lamott?

Symbiotic Character
by
Stephen M. Johnson
Anne W
, September 14, 2018
The title, meant for "students" of character structure, e.g., learners in psychotherapy & human development, is "spot on!". Johnson looks with an articulate eye at the way in which individuals (like me!) have developed & can predominantly recover from early developmental wounds that lead to this way of being in & viewing the world. I found it tremendously useful as a practicing psychotherapist because returning to it occasionally supported me in keeping my symbiotic reactions out of the room. But now, in retirement, symbiotic reactions mostly, & occasionally, arise with family & friends. I continue to consult the book to "keep me sober" from the symbiotic maze.
