Lost Orphan

I haven’t read Stacey Halls’s debut novel The Familiars, but had heard great things of it so was full of trepidation when it came to reading the notoriously difficult second book. I really shouldn’t have worried though. The pitch-perfect prose brings Georgian London to vivid life, and strongly engages us with the central protagonist Bess Bright. She has had to give up her newborn baby Clara and the story follows her quest years later to find her daughter again. The reader really feels for her as she persists and persists. It makes lots of points about social divisions in the eighteenth (and twenty-first?) centuries and what it means to be a mother, all wrapped up in a page-turning narrative. The end result a charming tale with a heartwarmingly happy conclusion.

Stranger on the Beach

Caroline Stark’s idyllic life falls apart when she finds out that her husband Jason has been unfaithful to her. He disappears with the woman she suspects him of having an affair with and all their savings. In revenge, Caroline gets involved with bad boy Aidan – is one stalking the other, or is this a real relationship? And is everything what it seems? We are told the story through lots of different perspectives so that we never know quite who to believe and keep changing our minds. The result is a completely unpredictable story that really does keep you reading till the end. I really enjoyed it; the plush holiday resort setting gave it an escapist element (and contrast to the nightmare scenario). Well worth reading for lots of twists and turns.

Gravity Is the Thing

This is simply a really charming book. As some chapters are only a single paragraph long, it works well when you’re on the go (as well as when you’ve got more time to read longer chapters too). We gradually piece together the life of Abigail over twenty years. She is a single parent and Happiness Café owner whose brother disappeared when he was fifteen and has never been found. Are there any clues in The Guidebook, a weird self-help book that has been mailed to Abigail over many years? The story is not linear but wanders in unexpected directions, but it’s worth joining the journey to get to know Abi and her young son Oscar. The tone is bittersweet and the characters are relatable. What’s not to enjoy?

All the Wrong Places

A really tense read with lots of family drama and some serial killer action for good measure! Four Bostonian women end up get involved with a dating app and we watch helplessly as the situation rapidly spirals out of control. Who will the next victim be? Paige has lost her job and her cousin had an affair with her partner so she has now moved home to be with her mother and close to her best friend Chloe. Each of the characters has her own agenda and we get to know them as the book goes on. When Paige meets a really interesting and attractive guy, is it really too good to be true? We all know the risks of dating apps, but it is an easily relatable story - who doesn't want true love? And you will be in suspense right until the end.

A really spellbinding book! The cover is beautiful – it is just so strikingly designed - and created an immediate sense of the story’s setting. The insides did not disappoint and lead the reader on a voyage through magic, mystery and fantasy. Following four characters who must get together to save their city of Creije and stop the spread of dark magic, it gradually exposes their histories and relationships: we consistently shift sympathies and perspectives. While the book may sound geared to young adults, it’s a terrific read for all ages - anybody who wants to step into a magical new world for a few hours! Yes, there’s a cliffhanger at the end – but I’ll just have to wait until the sequel’s out to find out what happens!

Three Little Truths

If you have ever wondered exactly what your neighbours get up to behind closed doors, then this is definitely one for you!! The book follows the adventures the residents of a small road as their lives progressively get more entwined and complicated. The crazy results are a bit unlikely but great fun nonetheless, and keep your attention for the duration. The characters and story lines are a mix of likeable and more sinister, which I guess captures what is going on in any community at any time. Highlights are the WhatsApp group and the plot twist at the end. Definitely one to settle down and read with a mug of tea when you have plenty of time on your hands and need a bit of fun escapism. And who doesn't?

The Last House Guest

This is a tale of a seaside paradise's dark side from Megan Miranda, the author of All the MIssing Girls. After her parents' death, Avery befriends Sadie. Sadie's family visit Avery's little coastal hometown of Littleport, Maine every year, where residents and holidaymakers worlds' rarely meet; the girls, though, become best friends. When Sadie's body is found at the bottom of cliff, Avery can't believe that she killed herself. Will she ever discover the truth and remove herself from suspicion? The setting is beautifully evoked, and the girls' friendship feels completely convincing. With some lovely humorous touches, this is one to take on the plane or sit with by the pool. It's definitely one you'll struggle to put down!!

I really enjoy historical fiction so when this book I arrived I was so excited. From the first glance it sounded terrific, and the complete book lived up to all my expectations! The author's vast levels of research really do pay off as you absolutely do feel like you’re stepping back in time – it really is that authentic! A city marshal and a teacher are both pursuing a murderer - will they meet and will they ensure justice? It is very nicely written and sheds fascinating light social problems and conflicts that still endure so gives you real food for thought. I hadn’t read the first in the series, but don't worry - this didn't detract from it, and I am now looking forward to reading more from this author.

You might pass this title past on the bookshop table, but please don't! It is brilliantly written and the characters really relatable. Sarah meets Eddie on her annual trip home. A drink turns into dinner which turns into them spending a wonderful week together. Eddie has to leave to go on a long-planned holiday, and, though he promises to be in touch, Sarah simply never hears from him again. Has something terrible happened to him? Does he want their relationship to end? Is there a dark secret that links their pasts? I loved the twists and turns in the plot and can definitely recommend this book. There's a real emotional depth to it that makes it much more than standard 'chic lit' so do give it a go.

Sarong Party Girls

Meet Jazzy – she’s a girl who likes to play hard with her gang of friends. Once of her friends, though, recently got married to the wrong sort of man. A portrait of a fascinating young woman, and her vibrant city of Singapore, it’s written in Singlish, which adds a really authentic touch. It sounds like a light, bright and sparkling read, but this is a much more complex book than it seems. There’s a great deal of acerbic social analysis and barbed humour that makes it a really interesting read. How do you find yourself when you have very few choices in life? And what effects to class and gender have on us all? The points can be made in a slightly over-forceful way (we get it, we get it), but they are uncomfortable truths that we need to recognise.
