Too Like the Lightning Terra Ignota Book 1

I cannot begin to express how good Ada Palmer's Terra Ignota books are. Science fiction by a historian, which means the world has a thickness that most science fiction worlds lack, and the story is about something that matters. Start with "Too Like the Lightning". It's about a reasonably happy and functional 25th Century Earth run by people who love the European 18th century, but it's so much more than that: a feast of and theology but also a ripping good read that nicely integrates the soaring rhetoric of the Enlightenment with vivid dialogue, brilliant characters, and an desperately intimate relationship between protagonist and reader. I have been reading science fiction for almost 50 years. This is right up there with the best.

Magnificent and captivating. This is the story of a 25th Century Earth run by people who love the European 18th Century: the philosophical optimism, the sweeping sentiments, the gender politics, and the soaring prose. The author is a historian, so where some science fiction is disciplined about science Palmer is disciplined about history. She knows that people live in history, fight over it, reinvent it, and all that is at stake in this rich and complex work. I have been reading science fiction critically for over 40 years. This one is going to rank among the best.
