Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Will North's latest book is another look at relationships in midlife. In this book, we are able to watch two people, both who have been wounded in the past, attempt to establish a relationship. The character of Lee (Lily) is especially delightful and says things others only think. Using the real life event of the Boscastle flood adds to this lovely novel, as the landscape of Cornwall becomes another character in the story.

I highly recommend this book! I had an opportunity to spend a day on Guernsey island in July and I wish I had been able to read this book before doing so. While taking the city bus around the island, a couple sitting behind me, gave me a running commentary about the war and different places the Germans had occupied. They were delightful. The wife was born there, but was in Manchester during most of the war at a factory making hand grenades. Reading the book made me feel as though I was meeting old friends.
