Gods Behaving Badly

Hilarious! An adult take on what would happen to Olympian gods living in London in modern times. Their tiffs, annoyances & feuds continue... As someone who read tales of Greek gods in childhood & studied the heroic poems in undergrad, I found Phillips' imagination well informed by the original myths and enjoyed her modern twists(what are Athena's powers in modern day?). I laughed frequently. Enjoyed her upending the ideas of beauty, love, and heroism. Her take on the Underworld is terrific...what skills are valued there, what it looks like, etc. Quite a fun, light, read.

I fell in love with this novel as a young teen. It's a romance and a hero story and a retelling of The Book of Esther. The brilliant (& beautiful) Esther grows up with her kind and thoughtful uncle in the Jewish section of town. When the palace counselors declare that all the beautiful women must report to the king (for he is choosing a wife) Esther, much to her surprise, is chosen as one of the women. She wins the heart of the king because she is a well read person and excellent conversationalist. She then uses her wit to outsmart the evil counselor Hamman. Her cleverness, brilliance and awesome dinner party skills save all the Jews from slaughter (she's an awesome queen). It was a satisfying read back in the 70's (a woman is smart, clever, & saves everyone with her strengths). An excellent retelling of an Old Testament tale.
