Maman The Cookbook All Day Recipes to Warm Your Heart
by
Elisa Marshall, Benjamin Sormonte, Lauren Salkeld
Valerie
, November 21, 2021
I’ll admit that, prior to the publication of this cookbook, I had never heard of the Maman cafes, despite being a pastry enthusiast and baker. That said, I can say that this exquisite cookbook is worth purchasing just for the cookie recipes – not only for the famed nutty chocolate chip cookies, but also for the equally enticing chocolate sandwich cookies (their sophisticated take on the Oreo) and the Vanilla Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, as well as the Chocolate-Hazelnut Brownies and Champagne Cake. For good measure, the savory recipes, many of which are plant-based, will inspire you to eat your veggies (you won't miss the meat, I promise). I see myself turning to this cookbook whenever I’m looking to elevate my baking and cooking, especially for a gathering or dinner party. I’ve received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Life Is What You Bake It: Recipes, Stories, and Inspiration to Bake Your Way to the Top: A Baking Book
by
Vallery Lomas
Valerie
, October 21, 2021
Although Vallery Lomas didn’t get her chance to shine after winning the Great American Baking Show (as her season was cancelled after the first episode), we now have a chance to witness her talents with her delightful cookbook. Lomas presents highly accessible and easy-to-follow recipes inspired by her life experiences, from growing up in Louisiana, college in Los Angeles, time spent in France, and living in New York. The one-bowl blueberry buckle was an easy (and delicious) recipe for me start with, and there are so many others I have bookmarked to try, from the Crawfish Hand Pies, Prediction Lemon Chiffon Cake, dark chocolate sea salt brownies, to the brioche and Olive Oil-Chocolate Chunk Cookies. Her personal stories, which she shares throughout the book, are captivating and inspiring. I’ve received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Black White & The Grey The Story of an Unexpected Friendship & a Landmark Restaurant
by
Mashama Bailey, John O Morisano
Valerie
, June 20, 2021
This timely book explores the complications that can arise when a white entrepreneur partners with a black chef to open a restaurant in the South. The book is far from linear, told from the perspectives of John Morisano and Mashama Bailey as they switch off telling their perspectives on the events and experiences that led to and have shaped their partnership. This candid account should be required reading not only for those interested in the restaurant industry, but for anyone seeking a better understanding of civil rights and race relations. I’ve received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Southern Ground Reclaiming Flavor Through Stone Milled Flour A Cookbook
by
Jennifer Lapidus
Valerie
, June 20, 2021
Southern Ground is a beautiful tribute to the bakers of the South, who turn out artisan loaves, pastries, and cookies from the flour milled by Carolina Ground. As an avid baker, I’ve embraced baking with heritage grains over the last couple of years. Southern Ground begins with profiles of bakers from around the South, before showcasing the recipes from the bakers and bakeries featured. Even if you’re not ready to bake sourdough, there are plenty of recipes that don’t require a starter, like decadent chocolate chip cookies and apple mascarpone cake, to inspire you. And you don’t need to source your flours from the South – Lapidus includes a list of mills across the United States, as well as abroad. If you’re ready to upgrade your baking, and learn to incorporate rye, spelt, buckwheat, and high-extraction flours to your repertoire, Southern Ground is a great resource to get started. I’ve received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Cook Real Hawaii
by
Sheldon Simeon, Garrett Snyder
Valerie
, April 15, 2021
Cook Real Hawaii is a beautiful tribute to the food, people, and state of Hawaii. Sheldon Simeon’s passion for his home state is evident as he introduces readers to its history and the ethnic communities (Native Hawaiians, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, and Portuguese) that make up its population and influence the local cuisine. The recipes include dishes commonly served in restaurants and homes, from the familiar (poke, saimin, and nori chicken) to the not so well-known (smoke meat and cake noodles with oyster sauce gravy), reflect the melting pot that is Hawaii. Simeon also includes some whimsical recipes of his own, such as loco moco gravy rice and eggplant “jun boy.” The recipes and highly personal stories make this one of the most captivating cookbooks on the food of Hawaii. Though I never watched him on Top Chef, I can see why he was voted Fan Favorite. For anyone longing for a Hawaiian getaway, this book can help you travel vicariously. I’ve received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

Mister Jius in Chinatown Recipes & Stories from the Birthplace of Chinese American Food
by
Brandon Jew, Tienlon Ho
Valerie
, April 10, 2021
I couldn't be more excited for this book. While regional Chinese cuisines have gained a higher profile in recent years, there has not been a cookbook that celebrates the food of the original Chinese settlers in San Francisco – Cantonese cuisine. Without the fiery chilies and floral, numbing peppercorns of Szechuan cuisine, or the biodiversity of Yunnan cuisine, Cantonese cuisine can be overlooked, with a relative lack of complexity, spice and strong flavors. However, the beauty of this cuisine is in its simplicity, as the region produces stellar produce and ingredients. Simple preparation allows natural flavors to shine. The farmers market bounty that Bay Area cooks (including Chef Brandon Jew) have access to provides the perfect vehicle to showcase this celebrated cuisine. Jew’s high-end training is evident in his recipes, in which he elevates simple Cantonese dishes such as celtuce, wontons (with squid ink wrappers? Yes please), and turnip cakes. Not all of the recipes in the book are Cantonese. Spicy food aficionados will appreciate the Hunan-style crispy petrale sole and Gong Bao Romanesco. And for fans of Chinese-American comfort foods, there are the orange chicken wings and Hangtown Egg Foo Young. For those with access to an incredible selection of farmers market produce, this book will provide great inspiration for the ambitious cook. I’ve received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

In Bibi's Kitchen: The Recipes and Stories of Grandmothers from the Eight African Countries That Touch the Indian Ocean
by
Hawa Hassan and Julia Turshen
Valerie
, November 22, 2020
In Bibi’s Kitchen is a timely cookbook that celebrates the cuisines of an oft-forgotten continent. Although I had some familiarity with Ethiopian cuisine, I knew little of most other African cuisines. Hawa Hasan’s beautiful book helps fill that void with this incredible resource of recipes from 8 countries along the Indian Ocean. Each country’s recipes are preceded by a short overview of the geography and climate, economy and resources, people, language, and religion, helping readers become acquainted with each country. Even through the recipes, we’re reminded of their complex histories of colonization and migration, as evidenced by Suugo Suqaar (pasta with beef sauce), chicken biryani, and samosas. As a bonus, we’re introduced to the Bibis (grandmothers) who have contributed their recipes to the book, which are easy to follow. Creating the recipes at home shouldn’t take too much effort - the ingredients can be easily found at your local supermarket (although you likely already have most of them in your fridge and pantry). I’ve received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.
