Dark and Shallow Lies
by
Ginny Myers Sain
Breysreviews
, September 29, 2021
Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain was a thriller tale of psychics, ghosts and secrets in a small town known to be the most pshycic in the country. 4/5 stars In La Chachete Louisiana, there is every type of psychic you can imagine. Along with 10 children all born within a few months of each other, known as the Summer Children. Grey is returning for the summer after her twin flame Eloras disappearance, and Grey wants to get to the bottom of it. Along with flashbacks, and secrets, she gets a lot more than she bargained for. This was thrilling! Immediately were pulled into the action, and it doesn’t let up. It wasn’t one basic secret that kept you going, it was a small town entwined with so many secrets, it seems like everyone is attached to some horrific event. I loved the plot. It seemed basic at first, but as it got going, it got spooky and it became so much more than it appears originally. The characters were so unique. They were honestly fascinating. I’m not going to go into too much detail. If you liked Here There Are Monster, Wilder Girls, or small towns with spooky undertones, I highly recommend.

House of Hollow

This book sounded so promising, a modern day fairytale with 3 sisters. I was actually very disappointed by how much I just wanted this book to be over, Our main character Iris wasn’t great, her sister was missing, she had disappeared for a month when she was younger and she was worried about her grades and going back to school, even when it was between life and death. The other 2 sisters Grey and Vivi were both super famous and everything you would imagine was a perfect life for them. I didn’t see a big connection even though we were told they meant so much to each other. The beginning of this book was super confusing and brought in details that had nothing to do with the actual plot of the story. We don’t need background on the girls grandma when it isn’t relevant to what’s happening. It was extremely wordy and hard to get through. I almost dnfed it a few times. I didn’t like it. I didn’t hate it. Meh,

Still Crazy
by
Judy Prescott Marshall
Breysreviews

Still Crazy by Judy Prescott Marshall was an... interesting read. It wasnt the type of book I would normally read, and it showed through my experience 2/5 stars. I know how much effort authors put into their novels, I know how much work it is, and I know that this is an indie author so I don’t want to sit here and tell you this book is horrible, because it’s not. This book just wasn’t for me. We spend the first chunk of this book with our main character suspecting her husband of cheating, but not confronting him for a year, that entire year Julie gets worse and worse mentally, we learn that she has extremely bad separation anxiety and that she’s very much so a women of god. Also, she’s perfect at everything and so stunning it’s easy to fall in love with her. I was bored. I was frustrated, I was screaming at the main character the entire book, the resolution (imo) wasn’t good, it was actually very disappointing. And everyone in the book is over the top friendly and willing to give their lives up to follow Julies plans. This is the story of going through the price and emotions of your husband cheating on you after 30 years of marriage 8 known times, and staying with him. I was frustrated this entire book. I know others will like it, so I’m not recommending you don’t check it out if you love books like this where everything just goes right even when it’s going wrong. It just wasn’t my type of book.

What Big Teeth
by
Rose Szabo
Breysreviews
, February 02, 2021
I finished What Big Teeth, and I’ve gone back and forth in my head several times trying to decide how I felt about it. 3-5 stars This book isn’t necessarily a bad book, but there is very little explaining and you’re just thrown into the story. This was one of the most wild and twisted books I have ever read, and my stomach is still in knots because I don’t know that i liked it, but I couldn’t stop reading. Our main character Eleanor is different from the rest of her family of werewolves. I still don’t understand what’s going on with her mother. I still don’t understand why she’s mad at everything and constantly being scolded for being “rude” in the beginning even though she wasn’t. And the side plot with the plants that never comes to anything. I’m still so confused by so much of this book. The reveals at the end were completely obvious by the time we got there, and I wasn’t shocked. I wouldn’t call this a horror novel, but I do read a lot of horror and this was maybe like a goosebumps type horror, it would’ve been scarier when I was younger. It’s very rare that I have a hard time putting into words my opinion on a book. This wasn’t good, but I couldn’t put it down, and I don’t know what I feel about it.

When the Apricots Bloom A Novel of Riveting & Evocative Fiction
by
Gina Wilkinson
Breysreviews
, February 01, 2021
When the Apricots Bloom by Gina Wilkerson was a heart wrenching, tear jerking history lesson that I wasn’t expecting. We are introduced to our three main characters, Huda, Ally and Raina who live in Baghdad during the regime of Saddam Hussein. Huda is a former extremely poor girl who has gotten a job at the embassy, and is reached out to by the secret policy to get information from her on her employer Tom and his wife Ally. She can’t refuse, or she’ll be thrown into torture and possibly her family as well. Ally is the wife of a very high ranking embassy employee and has a lot of secrets of her own, that could just put her in peril. Rania is a former close friend of Huda and a rich artist who is hired to paint a portrait of the presidents and his sons... and causes danger for her daughter. This book was extremely well written. It is a glimpse into the history of Iraq when tensions were extremely high, and regime was extremely strong. I have never read anything from this point of view where we see what the citizens go through and I genuinely enjoyed every second of reading through this book. The ending was shocking, the events were wild, it was one of those books I couldn’t put down. There are some scenes that are slightly graphic in their description as it is very hard to know their struggles were real.

Black Buck
by
Mateo Askaripour
Breysreviews
, January 05, 2021
I don’t know what I was expecting from Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour, but it wasn’t what the book ended up being, in the best way. 4.75/5 stars (bumped to a 5 on all review websites) This novel is a satirical humor, built around the world of minorities in sales positions. We start off with Darren (Buck) getting a job of a start-up therapy sales company and going through hell week. We are taken through “hell week”, through tragedy, loss, and success. Bucks changes and character arc throughout this story was absolutely incredible and made him one of my all time favorite characters. This novel is written in both a how-to and novel format, small peaks of hits and tips popped in. Those are were I saw most of the funny moments. The humor in this book is mostly satirical and so it is extreme irony. I don’t read a lot of satire, so I may not be the best judge, but I really enjoyed the setup and the way it was written. From the beginning to the end of this novel, we are taken through a lot of emotions. It is very realistic and very described in a way that makes you feel like you’re going through those emotions on this wild ride. There were moments where I was screaming at the main character, cussing them out and cheering Buck on. And the revenge story... did not see that coming, but oh my god did it add so much to the ending! This book comes out today, and I highly suggest checking it out. Thanks so much to the publisher for my gifted copy!

Spy in the Struggle
by
Aya de Leon
Breysreviews
, December 27, 2020
Spy in the Struggle by Aya de Leon was easily one of the best books I’ve read this year that I wasn’t 100% sure I would like. It surprised me quite a bit! 😎😎😎😎😎/5 stars on this one! Our main character Yolanda was very interesting to read about. She had a certain stigma on poor minorities even though she was one herself. Her character arc was so subtle, but so impactful it was amazing. Our main love interest came with a small plot twist that I didn’t see coming. It was super weird to hear about covid-19 in a book. This book is very relevant and very real, so if you don’t like fiction that gives you a look into how society could possibly be, maybe skip this one. It is beautifully written and very enjoyable. Last thing, it is not YA so there are some parts with very described dirty scenes in them, so keep that in mind. This book comes out December 29th!

Skyhunter 01
by
Marie Lu
Breysreviews
, December 26, 2020
Skyhunter by Marie Lu was a quick and easy ya read that starts off a wonderful beginning to a new series. 4.5/5 stars. This book begins in a beautiful world created by Marie Lu. Expected. I love the worlds she creates. That’s something she excels at. Things that worked: I loved loved loved our main character Talin. Her vocal cords were hurt when she was a child so the only way she can speak is by sign language, which lucky for her, her entire battalion is required to learn in battle. I have never read ya where the main character can’t actually speak. This novel is fast paced and easy to keep up with. I genuinely loved the progression and how easy this was for me to get through. Things that didn’t work: The heartbreak in this novel is continuous. Our characters are constantly beaten down and struggling. It is extremely easy to connect with them and cheer them on. Just a heads up for potential readers, it will not be an emotionally easy read I loved this. I’m just sad it is a series and we’re going to have to wait between books. That stresses me out to no end. I highly recommend my ya fans check this book out. Definitely worth the read!
