Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Manicurists Daughter

I received a free e-arc of this book through Netgalley. This memoir is very personal about the journey of the youngest daughter in a Vietnamese family with 4 children whose mother dies from botched plastic surgery when the younest is only 11. This is the youngest child, Susan's, path through grief and trying to understand who their mother was. A very emotional journey of discovery.

Finding Freedom A Cooks Story Remaking a Life from Scratch
by
Erin French

I received a free ARC from Celadon Books. Erin French's story about growing up in her parents' diner and falling in love with cooking before leaving for college, getting derailed and restarting her dreams has a "don't give up" aspect to it. Her writing is entertaining and inviting despite the grittiness of some of the content. It takes pressure to make diamonds and she certainly has made an overwhelming success of The Lost Kitchen. I was interested in learning more about it from her website, but the Pandemic has shut things down so I had to amuse myself by re-reading the food descriptions in the book which make my mouth water. The freshness and local aspect of her ingredients make them sound much more appetizing than anything that has traveled to reach the grocery store. #FindingFreedomMemoir @CeladonReads
