Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Learn Python in a weekend

Like most beginner python books, you need a little experience to get started. It talks a lot about 'goals', yet changed 'goals' to 'objectives' without letting the user know. The first lesson is the print function, like all start with. The problem is it gives an example that does not work and tell you they will explain more later (what happened to "Hello world"?, instead we get TextString1, Textstring2, TextStingN). Needed an editor, sometimes difficult to read with half sentences left in where they should have been removed. The end of the book contains a nice listing of common errors and what they mean.

A great book for learning how to handle and shoot a slingshot. Covers just about everything, from bands, to stance, pouches, ammo, and more.

Like his first book, his charm comes through. Great recipes, explanations, and photos. It is like seeing snapshots of his videos. Easy to follow and some good food.

A follow-up to Phrase Seven. To be honest I put it down during the second chapter. The editing and proofreading, in my copy at least, was horrible. I couldn't get past it. I can't rate something I can't finish. I was hoping it would be better than the first book and turned out the editing was worse, and once again he praises his editor.

Phrase Seven

A good first effort. Gets bogged down here and there. As I read it I wished he had hired an editor, then finished and read the afterword where he praised his editor. Chase's non-fiction work is great, and I wish this had as much attention. The story moves well and falls into traps it sets for itself. Parts were very predictable and parts wre not, mostly because they didn't make sense logically. Worth a read if you like Chase's work or if you like conspiracy type stuff.
