Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times
by
Jane Goodall and Douglas Abrams

, November 12, 2021
A lovely book that feels like you’re sitting across from Dr. Jane Goodall, a plate of warm scones and steaming mugs of tea before you, as she chats about her life from her childhood, to her time in Africa with her beloved chimps, and to her present day environmental activism. There are wonderful stories and a genuine sense of hope that she imparts about our planet. Inspiring and highly recommended! Pub Date 19 Oct 2021 Thanks to the authors and Celadon Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

We Are the Brennans
by

This beautifully written book about a dysfunctional Irish family brings back memories of my own clan, with its secrets, shame, alcohol abuse, and relationship struggles, all underpinned by love. I adored the different characters, starting with Sunday Brennan, who wakes up in an L.A. hospital after a drunk driving accident she caused, and returns home, ashamed, to her family in NY. Her appearance forces the revelation of long-held family secrets, which cascade through the clan. I especially loved how each chapter is told from a different POV, adding depth and richness to the tale, which made me cringe, gasp, laugh, cry, and page madly through to the compelling end. Perfect for anyone with Irish blood and readers who love messy family dramas. Thanks to author Tracey Lange and @Celadon Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Love People Use Things Because the Opposite Never Works
by

CHANGE YOUR LIFE! I’m a minimalist at heart, so found LOVE PEOPLE, USE THINGS to be a fascinating read. The authors, who’ve had two Netflix documentaries on the subject, expand the concept through seven chapters that focus on Stuff, Truth, Self, Values, Money, Creativity, and People. Their ideas go way beyond just decluttering and living with less. It offers a holistic approach that applies to every aspect of life, and really made me think about whether I’m living a life true to my own values. I was particularly struck by how much time I spend online — nearly 24 x 7 — as I review books and tend to social media. After reading LOVE PEOPLE, USE THINGS, I’ve vowed to change this. My online addiction goes against my most of my cherished values of putting loved ones first over activities. If I can change this, my life will improve significantly. Wow! Highly recommended for anyone who wants to change their priorities and focus on what really matters. Pub Date 13 Jul 2021 Thanks to @joshuafieldsmillburn, @ryannicodemus, and @celadonbooks for the review copy; opinions are mine. #LovePeopleUseThingsBook #CeladonBooks @CeladonBooks #joshuafieldsmillburn #ryannicodemus #theminimalists #selfhelpnonfiction #valuesclarificationguides
