The Girls

Emma Cline

I'm gonna be honest. This was a hard book to get into. It took me about 3 or 4 chapters to get to the meat of the story, but holy hell! Once I got passed that, it was hard to put down. The story is a fictionalized version of the Manson Girls, told from the perspective of someone who was in the circle but not at the actual murders. I am slightly obsessed with the Manson murders, mainly the reason why a group of people could do such a horrendous crime all in the name of love for one person. This book actually helped focus that reason- what was happening in 1969 that could lead people to the Ranch and the why they stayed. I know that this is fiction, but it did actually help to define the reasons a little bit more, especially since it is being told from a person who wanted so badly to be in it but fate kept intervening. Evie Boyd is a normal 14 year old in the summer of 1969 who just doesn't fit in anywhere until she gets in the radar of Suzanne, a tall beautiful outcast that will change Evie's life, and her view of the world, forever. She becomes obsessed with Suzanne and follows her out to the Ranch and into the view of Russell, an enigmatic musician who opens her eyes to what the world truly is, both the good and the horrific. Told through flashbacks, first person and present day, this story is engrossing and eye opening in so many ways.

Little Bigfoot Big City Volume 2
by
Jennifer Weiner

, June 21, 2018
I loved the first book and this one did not disappoint either. The story picks up right when the first left off- Alice has finally found a friend in Millie and believes that she has found her Tribe, she just needs to prove it. Millie has also found a friend in Alice and a way to make her dream of singing on The Next Stage come true. Jeremy has realized that the secret of the Yare and Millie and Alice are worth keeping secret and has decided to help them instead of hunting them. But everything they always wanted will be questioned and torn apart as they all find the truth is more difficult to accept and what they truly want may not be what they need. I love that these stories have such strong women characters who learn to love themselves just as they are and that they find their own tribe and family who accept them for who they truly are. I can't wait to see how their stories end and if they become happy with what happens.

Littlest Bigfoot
by
Jennifer Weiner

I have always loved Jennifer Weiner's adult novels, so when I heard that she had written a children's book, I was intrigued. It read just like her other novels and has a wonderful moral in the heart about learning to love yourself and who your friends truly are. This is the story of Alice, Millie and Jeremy. Three kids who don't know each other, who's lives are quite similar and who's fates will meet and change not just theirs, but everyone around them. Alice, from NYC, a young girl who doesn't fit in with her upper crust parents, gets sent to a unique boarding school in upstate New York where she meets Millie, a little Yare with a big voice who doesn't fit in with her quiet village. Jeremy is the youngest and most ordinary in his family who becomes obsessed with proving that Bigfoots do exist. And that is when their lives get complicated but also so much richer. I can't wait to read the continued adventures of these new friends.

Time Next
by
Carolyn Cohagan

, May 13, 2018
After reading Time Zero I was so looking forward to the sequel and it did not disappoint!!!! I was enthralled from the first page and could not put it down. Mina and her friends survived their escape from Manhattan to the outside but now they have to navigate through a new religion , rules and people using them for their own advantage. Mina now must rely on herself as well as learn who to truly trust in this new world. Which is never easy. And the fact that Carolyn Cohagan based everything on real life is extraordinary! Women throughout the world have to endure everything that Mina and her friends do. It's truly heartbreaking. I can't wait to see how this all ends!!!!

The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo

I knew that Amy was funny and I follow her on Instagram, but honestly don't know that much about her private life, so was really intrigued by this book. I was blown away! Truly honest about every aspect of her life and doesn't hold back. I laughed, cried and found a soul mate. She had me saying out loud on more than one occasion "YES!!! THIS IS ME!!!!" Her honesty about not only her past horrible relationships but about her family's pain and issues has made me a true fan that can't wait to see what she does next.

Ready Player One
by
Ernest Cline
Amy Volker
, November 26, 2017
I loved this book!!! I had heard about it for months now but waited to read it. I have no idea why I waited. I got sucked in from the very beginning and couldn't wait to see how it all ended. This story is part Matrix, part Willy Wonka and part Jason Bourne. It was also becoming too real. As I was reading it, the PokemonGo game became huge and I just kept thinking back to the virtual reality OASIS world in the book and cringed. It was becoming reality. Our real lives are becoming too difficult so to get sucked into the virtual world is much too easy. And since I grew up in the '80's, all of the pop culture references was just intoxicating and brought back a lot of memories from my childhood. A true homage to all of us lovable geeks in the world.

Armada
by
Ernest Cline
Amy Volker
, November 26, 2017
Being a child of the '80s, I devoured Ernest Cline's first book, "Ready Player One", so I was excited to hear he wrote a second novel. And this one did not disappoint. This is a great coming of age story with every video game/sci fi movie/nerd pop reference you could hope for. Just like his first novel, "Armada" sucks you in. Zack Lightman is just a normal 17 year old trying to figure out his life. Close to graduating high school and facing reality, raised by a single mom when his dad was killed when he was a baby, he is also trying not to lose his mind. Then he sees an alien ship. One that is in his favorite video game, "Armada". And from that point on, Armada becomes real. And his life will never be the same. Between the pop references, the hostile alien storyline and Zack figuring out who his Dad was, I was hooked. Oh, and cameos from Dr. Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson? Yup, I'm in!

Land of Stories 02 Enchantress Returns
by
Colfer, Chris
Amy Volker
, October 16, 2017
After reading the first book in the series, I was excited to see the next quest that Alex and Conner jumped in to. And this did not disappoint. I loved that the first book turned some of my favorite fairy stories on their head. Chris Colfer wrote so vividly about the Fairy Tale world that I wanted to join the twins in their adventures and am so glad that I get to. This time, they have to defend their beloved new world from the evil Enchantress and they are joined by their new friends, Froggy, Jack, Goldilocks, and surprisingly, Queen Red. I just loved the Jack/Goldilocks/Red love triangle from the first book and the continuation did not disappoint. But this book is also about the twins figuring out who their family is and where they belong: what is the definition of home. This quest shows them both who they are, where they belong and sets the stage for their future and future stories from the land of Fairy Tales. Can't wait to continue their stories!!!

TodHunter Moon 03 StarChaser
by
Angie Sage
Amy Volker
, October 16, 2017
I fell in love with the Septimus Heap series and was so sad when it ended, so I was excited to know that Angie Sage had created a trilogy that continued in the world of Septimus and was focused on a young girl, Alice TodHunter Moon. This is the final book and I just loved it! She is a strong but flawed character that is just trying to find where she fits in her world. This story picks up where the last one ended, with the Orm egg hatched and the future of Magyk at stake. Tod and the Tribe of Three go through several quests and Tod finally realizes what means the most to her and her place in the world. It's a quick read and an exciting story that kept me reading until the very end. Someday I hope Ms. Sage continues the Heap's story and includes Tod in them.

Royal We
by
Heather Cocks
Amy Volker
, June 17, 2017
To be honest, I am obsessed with anything royal- real and imaginary. So I bought this book based solely upon the title. But I loved this book! I couldn't put it down. The story has elements from Catherine and William's love story as well as Charles/Diana, Andrew/Sarah and Frederik/Mary. The Prince is just a normal university bloke trying to find someone who will love him for himself, not his title, while trying to have a somewhat normal university experience. The Lady is just a normal American in a foreign land trying to find herself in the world without her twin sister. Sounds like true love to me. But the road to happily ever after never runs smooth, especially when you date the heir to the throne in a world with social media. I just loved that both of them are not perfect and they are trying to navigate rough situations both from external and internal forces trying to keep them apart. You just root for them and hope they both see they love each other before they do stupid things to ruin it forever.

Inferno
by
Dan Brown
Amy Volker
, July 25, 2015
I love Dan Brown's books. They are interesting, edge of your seat educational thrillers. Out of all of them, this one has been my favorite. The twists and turns begin on page one and you get caught up with Professor Langdon and his need to remember as much as figure out the mystery. It is also very topical- over population and a noted scientists theory on how to fix the issue. I couldn't put it down until the end and then I still didn't want it to be over. Highly recommend this book.

What Remains A Memoir Of Fate Friendship & Love
by
Carole Radziwill
Amy Volker
, February 08, 2015
I bought this book a few years ago on bargain and just have never been in the mindset to read it until now. This is truly a moving account of true love, friendship and deep heartbreak. Carole was an insider to one of the most talked about marriages and deaths of a fairytale couple. She sheds light on their relationship but also about her own. Her husband is John Kennedy's cousin and she is Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's friend. But this book is not just about the 4 of them. It is about facing cancer that lies within her husband and about coming to terms with death- both realized and sudden. I cried at the end of this book, even though I knew how their lives ended. She writes with a journalistic point of view and the view point of hindsight. This is a touching memoir about love in every form and how 2 people from completely opposite worlds can fall in love and deny the evil of cancer for just a short time.

Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend
by
Matthew Dicks
Amy Volker
, August 28, 2014
I can honestly say that I never had an imaginary friend like Budo when I was young and I wish I did. But Budo is not imaginary to Max, the little boy who created him. Budo is his only friend, his lifeline and the only person who can help him do the unthinkable- grow up. This novel was sweet, tense and heartbreaking. For those of us that had friends of the imaginary kind when we were little, this book will bring them back. Just like Toy Story taught us about what toys did when we weren't looking, this shows us what our imaginary friends do when we need them the most.

Runaway Princess
by
Hester Browne
Amy Volker
, August 28, 2014
I gravitate towards anything that has Princess in the title and this was in the bargain area of my local bookstore, so of course I picked it up. It took me months to finally start reading this but only about 3 days to finish it. I loved this book! The lead character, Amy Wilde, is thrown into the deep end when she starts a new relationship only to discover after the fact of who he really is. She is strong, vulnerable, but above all true to herself. And Leo is the perfect man! I want one in real life. This reads like a romantic comedy and I just couldn't put it down!

Alphabet Sisters

, August 05, 2014
This is the book that started my love affair with Monica McInerney. The characters are all relatable and the interactions are wonderful. I lose myself with her families and into the countries that they are set (usually Australia and Ireland). It's always family drama of some sort but this one about sisters hit close to home. I highly recommend her books and this one is a favorite of mine.

Starcatchers 01 Peter & The Starcatchers
by
Dave Barry
Amy Volker
, September 12, 2011
As an adult, I am finding that the book series in the Young Adult/Teen sections are just as engaging and suspenseful as any adult series that I have read. After reading the Harry Potter series, I was looking for another great series to sink my teeth into. I am a huge Disney fan and read the back of this and thought what an interesting concept to take the storyline of Peter Pan and start fresh. I loved Gregory Maguire's books and the twists that he does on tales (Wicked; Mirror, Mirror), so I thought I would try this series. I absolutely love this book! It's a new take on how Peter became the Peter Pan that we all know and love. It's a thrilling and suspenseful story and the beginning of a wonderful series. For adults, I highly recommend looking at the Kids sections for some great stories and series.

Royal Weddings
by
Friederike Haedecke, Julia Melchior
Amy Volker
, September 08, 2011
I love this book. I bought it wrapped and thought it was strictly about William and Catherine. It's not. Beautiful pictures and articles about several other royal weddings over the years, including TRH Crown Prince and Princesses of Denmark, Norway, Spain and the Netherlands. Also includes, Rainier and Grace, Charles and Diana and the Queen and Prince Philip. I collect anything royal and just love this beautiful book with pictures I have never seen and learned a lot of behind the scenes of royal weddings, including the fact that the ABBA song "Dancing Queen" was written about the current Queen of Sweden, for their wedding in 1976! Highly recommend this book for anyone who loves royalty the way I do.
