Grass: Arbai 1

I decided to read Grass after reading the brief intro to the book...the combination of plague and aristocracy in a foreign land intrigued me a bit, but also because the planet was called "Grass" and the impression of an eerie dystopian monoculture. After the first 100 or so pages the storyline really picks up and a multitude of interesting character and anthropological elements are added to the plot. The prose is compelling and shows excellent use of metaphor and juxtaposition. I appreciated that the story wasn't dominated with anthropomorphic aliens but maintained a very humanistic quality. Recommended!

An incredibly influential book...and an obvious precursor to Orwell's 1984. The excellent mix of well-written prose, suspense, and unpredictability make for an masterful story which will stay with long after your have finished the novel. It's strange, I really enjoyed this book (almost as much as I did Orwell's 1984), but if I had read this book before 1984...then I think I would have liked it even more (and 1984 less). A quick and insightful read...definitely recommended.

Meaningful Life

The novel was particularly insightful for me as I am entering a similar phase as the protagonist...turning 30 years old. This book was filled with subtle yet hilarious passages, and a very unique conclusion which I did not see coming. Recommended.

Merely validated what I had already suspected, but it was engaging and insightful reading nonetheless...

What did I learn from this book? That I should read fiction, and Vonnegut, far more often.

Despite sounding horribly cliché...it's an introspective book that everyone should read. Loved it.

Culture Jam How to Reverse Americas Suicidal Consumer Binge Any Why We Must

I read large portions of this book years ago, and for some reason I felt to compelled to pick it back up and read it anew. It's a fabulous read...insightful, captivating, and leaves you stupefied by the shame of our culture. There was something very different about reading (and finishing) this book in 2009 than in 2002. Nearly a decade has passed since its publication and the book now suffers from what I call a "happy ending chapter"...one of those conclusions were an author ignores the previous pages of intense research and critical analysis only to culminate with some lackluster solutions in an attempt to spin the massive problem as easily solvable. Don't get me wrong...I loved this book and would highly recommend it, but the conclusion which was inspiring in 2000 has become quite depressing in 2009.

Killer Angels

To be honest I have never really been all that interested in the American Civil War. Now that I think about it, this is likely due to the various sterilized and glorified versions I've been fed during my education as a youth. I'm not sure what exactly compelled me to pickup this book, but I'm damn glad I did. This isn't one of those lame history books with long winded prose that attempts to detail an account of every minute. Instead, we are given a brief insight into the character and motivating factors of a few of the commanding officers. The result is a very compelling read which was difficult to put down.
