Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Sermon on the Mount
by
Emmet Fox
laston lastof
, November 10, 2009
lifting the veil and showing one the magic behind the scenes ... offering the reader the secure knowledge that this "magic" is available to them through a realization of faith... i have re-read Sermon on the Mount several times and been refreshed each time... Caution this book discusses God stuff. Warning previously held ideas about God will be challenged and altered. This aint Sunday school baby ... but if your Sunday school teacher is worth their salt then they likely have a copy of Sermon on the Mount squirreled away

Read it. Understand what "they" know. Read it. Understand why "they" know. Read it. Understand when "they" know. Read it. Understand and you too will know. Read it.

Emmet Fox

Emmett Fox is the perfect next author if you have already tossed your ISBN: 0310210747 into the trash can. Emmett Fox is the perfect next author if you found ISBN 0310931274 or ISBN 0310917255 too hard to fully understand. Emmett Fox is the perfect next author if you have been eschewed by those espousing ISBN:0812975235. Emmett Fox will take your spiritual life to places you have been warned by churches not to go into. The LAND of the METAPHYSICAL.

Mans Search For Meaning An Introduction To Logotherapy
by
Viktor E Frankl
laston lastof
, February 10, 2008
Refreshingly new insights into the world we know today as the holocaust. Refreshing because the author does not seize on his interment as a victim. Indeed Frankl emerges from the Nazi era darkness with what may well be the only beam of light available. Research, ideas and innovations become his vehicle of survival and transporter of hope. Turning a fatal hopelessness into the opportunity of a lifetime as he studies in detail both captor and captured. Discovering as he shares his understanding, more truth than most of us would care to admit. Refreshing, because Viktor Frankl refuses to let his apparent circumstances dictate the outcome apparently fated by nature of the circumstance.

Conversations Walter Murch & the Art of Editing Film
by
Michael Ondaatje
laston lastof
, February 10, 2008
Those who write say a good movie can not be made with out first having a good story. Those who operate the camera say that with out excellent pictures shot you can not have a good movie. Those who direct say that with out direction it is cacophony. Those who act say that without them the entire screen would be blank and void vistas. Those who do any of the hundreds of other tasks in a production company know deep in their hearts that without their unique talents all would be lost. Begging the question ... Who makes it all work so i can see a finished film/video. Enter Walter Murch. Read the insights of a mind blanched in the crucible of daily conversation with author Michael Ondaatje. Enjoy the musings of the person to whom belong the deft fingers, which have manipulated the machines, that brought many films to the screens of our lifetime.

Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
by
Steven D Levitt

Go on a journey with authors whose smartness is documented by those recognized as documenters of smartness. Use this actual smartness to explore some commonly held stupidity and cause your self to become smart too. Reading this book will make you not only seem more smarterly but more gooder too. I even find myself quoting this work at dinner parties, cross country bus seat sharing opportunities, serendipities encounters and other occasions where groups of one or more have assembled to listen to my pontifications.
