Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Art of Bloomsbury Roger Fry Vanessa Bell & Duncan Grant

A vibrant and fascinating collection of art that illustrates art movements of the late 19th and early 20th century as explored and interpreted by a close group of British artists. There are works inspired by Impressionism, Pointillism, Les Nabis, Fauvism, Cubism, Collage, and Abstraction. The text provides information not only on the art, but also on the connections among the members of the larger Bloomsbury group. A fine time capsule of creative exuberance in the transition from the Victorian to the Modern Era.

My Bread

Do you need a whole book based around one bread recipe? If you're like me and need visual information along with your text, then yes you do. I could follow a recipe just fine, but how do I know if the dough looks right? How should the dough look when I shape it into a loaf? Pictures to the rescue! Once I've followed the ingredient list to mix the dough, I just refer to the photos of all of the steps for the rest of the process. Great bread that's easy to make. Your friends and family will be impressed with your professional baking skills.

A beautifully written book about the search for the source of unification of an ancient people, this book was written in Yugoslavia shortly before it shattered into numerous bloody pieces.

On the cover of my copy of Sum is the blurb "Read Sum and be amazed." I saw that and thought "Yeah, right." Then I started reading the book and yes, I was amazed. The stories are short but they pack a punch. They give you something to think about long after you've read them.
