Threads That Bind 01

I must say as someone who reads a lot of mythology-based fantasy books this one really stuck out for its awesome premise and worldbuilding. The author did a fantastic job exploring and incorporating various mythologies from around the world into her own unique world. The idea of these other-born that are descendants of Gods and Goddesses that are born with these gifts from the God they descended from is epic. The moira-born though that it must be 3 sisters, and each has a gift based on the order of birth?! Amazing! The author's ability to craft this world with all these complex nuances and nods to mythologies was awe-inspiring. I really enjoyed reading about the complex relationships between the sisters. Io is a character that is relatable and yet her own harshest critic. I was really impressed by how the story progressed and the details that made this world come to life. It was an incredible journey and I look forward to disappearing into this vibrant world again.

Garden of the Cursed 01

One of my favorite books I've read this year! Totally going on my Best Books of 2023 list. Katy Rose Pool has been an author whose books I immediately place at the top of my TBR since I had the pleasure of reading her debut novel. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the fact that it ended, because I desperately NEEDED MORE! I loved this unique and exciting magic system with curses and curse breakers at the forefront, and with a magical family hierarchy ruling them all in the background. I even found the romance between Adrius and Marlow to be built up perfectly, which is rare these days in YA fantasy books. I adored how from the very beginning of this book we got a strong sense of this world and where the power lies. This author writes such amazing worlds that I am eager to see where we go next. I cannot wait till I am able to get my hands on the sequel and get the answers I need.

Stars and Smoke

Marie Lu has written something completely different than her usual sci-fi/fantasy, with this enemies-to-lovers spy meets popstar romance action novel. If this premise feels like something you would find on Wattpad or another fanfic site then you are not alone, but the action sequences and intriguing mystery/spy thriller plot kept this story engaging and exciting. While it is not like anything this author has done before, she does it well. The characters of Winter and Sydney are fleshed out and each have their own backstories that perfectly explain the character's motives. I do think that Winter's character is slightly more fleshed out than Sydney's, both characters POVs allow readers to get to know them more and connect with what they are going through. Personally, I thought that Winter was a more interesting character, but Sydney was a character I'd be more interested in seeing long term.

Clytemnestra A Novel
by

Wow, what an intense read. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book as a lot of the Greek myth retellings focusing on the female characters tend to highlight and sometimes almost glorify the trauma and pain these women endure. I liked how the author never really breezed over the horrors Clytemnestra endures but it also showed how she continuously moves forward, never forgetting, but planning her next move. This woman is a survivor and has mastered the art of patience as she never, NEVER forgets what has been done to her and certainly gets revenge for it. The familial bonds were nice to explore as well, as it really does shape Clytemnestra's character and how she acts. I felt horrified at the pain she goes through, but I also felt her triumphs when she defends what is hers. Still, this book was an emotionally heavy read and I had to stop reading and eat some ice cream at one point to make me feel better.

Ring of Solomon

I was lucky enough to receive an advance readers copy of this fun middle grade fantasy. I loved how much this book reminded me of the joy of reading Percy Jackson for the first time. It also really captured the magic of what made the Percy Jackson series so entertaining and engaging for readers of all ages. However, what really made me excited about this book was that it explored and subsequently brought to life Jewish mythology which is under-represented in mainstream children's books. So, I was really happy to see this book being released. The characters were fun and each one brought another element to the story. The relationship between Ash and Zach was heartwarming and funny. I am very pleased to say that this is an excellent addition to the recent addition of middle grade books bringing various mythologies to life for young readers.

Promise Boys

One of my favorite books of 2023! I absolutely love how this book put us in each character's shoes and explored how all the different characters were thinking and feeling. It reminded me of Wonder by R.J. Palacio, in that it took the time to make us see things from everyone's point of view not just the main three boys. This was a fast-moving story, that grabbed my attention and never let go. I enjoyed how the author explored issues of race, poverty, and inequality in our school systems and our nation's justice system. It felt very authentic, in how people rushed to judge the boys and how Principal Moore was upheld as this savior of young men. I liked how we saw that the school shifted over time until it was an unrecognizable prison holding these male students hostage instead of nurturing them into men. The characters were really well written, and no character was a stand up cardboard cut out. All characters were explored and it made for an excellent novel. I am looking forward to seeing what else this author creates in the future.

Chaos and Flame

Chaos & Flame has all everything a great fantasy book needs- political intrigue, enemies to lovers romance, and an epic magic system that is utterly unique. I loved how the book was set up to bounce between the two main characters POVs. The writing was sharp and clever, and descriptive enough to where you could clearly place yourself in this war-torn world. I quickly became invested in the characters and their motives for doing things were clear and captivating. The best part of this book is the magic system/house system which gives each house a mythical creature like the Kraken, Dragon, Sphinx, Phoenix, and a few others. Now once upon a time each regent of the house could actually become the creature and protect/defend their lands and people, but a hundred years ago that stopped. I was thrilled to see how the book ended and what that means for the next book. Incredible read!
