Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Thursday Murder Club

You don't need to be chronologically challenged to appreciate the wonderful characters at the heart of this book. Set in an English retirement community, the Thursday Murder Club begins as a small group that discusses hypothetical murder cases. But soon they are confronting real cases. There are plenty of suspects, and plenty of twists and turns. The real joy of this book are the central characters who, despite their ages, refuse to roll over and play dead (to the consternation of the local police). This is the most enjoyable book I have read in a long time. Check it out.

Rainbow History Class Your Guide Through Queer & Trans History

This book combines interesting historical info with fun art and progressive messages that make it a pleasure to read. One fun fact example: In the 1920s the British decided not to add lesbian acts to the "Buggery Laws" because they were afraid it would make too many women want to try it! There is also a good discussion of how Western powers exported homophobia and transphobia during imperialism. This is well worth your time. And maybe buy a copy for a homophobic acquaintance.
