Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I would have given the book four and a half stars, but half stars are not an option, but the cover alone earned the half star coming to a total of five stars. Zoe is a thirty something woman who sweeps floors and cleans cages at Pope Pharmaceuticals. One day she comes home to find a large jar in her living room. She talks to her therapist, Nick about the jar and should she open it. Everything changes when the President of the United States makes an annoucement that humans are no longer a viable species and the end of the world is near.A pathogen is released that kills 90% of the human race. The remaining 10% are changed either into visible mutations or ones that have hidden changes inside of them. Nick leaves to help his parents in Greece. Zoe follows when she finds she is pregnant with Nick's child. On her journey she encounters a nemesis, known only as the Swiss. She also meets up with many interesting characters who either help or hinder her quest. There are a lot of twists and turns, especially at the end. I have recently become a fan of post apolcalyptic novels and this is one of the best I've read so far. Even if you don't like this genre, give this one a try. It is really good.

Notting Hell

This was a joy to read. See the movie Notting Hill first to get an idea of the setting. This is wickedly funny. A group of odd, vain and funny people live around a communal garden. They behave badly but it is so much fun to watch them mess up their "perfect" lives. Having it all isn't always what it's cracked up to be.
