Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Monuments Men Allied Heroes Nazi Thieves & the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History
by
Robert M Edsel

This is a fascinating true account of the men and one woman that were able to identify and save works of art, preserve monuments, etc during WWII and afterwards that we all recognize as part of our collective heritage. Robert Edsel is able to bring to life the relatively few people (with no budget, no troops, etc) who were able to ensure that the treasures in Europe were able to survive. Further, the Monuments Men were not disbanded when WWII ended, they continued to locate and return as much as they could uncover---which is an amazing amount. I do not believe the participants of this endeavor have ever been given the credit deserved. You will never regard Mona Lisa in the same light.

Shadow Of The Wind
by
Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Carlos Ruiz Zafon

I was completely drawn in by the 10th page...the story is a book for book lovers, with intrigue, history, love and despair added. Before I had even finished Shadow of the Wind, I went online to find other books by Carlos Ruiz Zafon--to my despair (at that time) the only Zafon book that had been translated into English was this one. I only hope the "Library of Forgotten Books" exists......
