Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Handmaid's Tale
by
Margaret Atwood
Jeanne
, October 18, 2007
Although this book was written in 1985, it is relevant to trends in the country that combine politics with sex, reproduction and women's individual rights of choice . A frightening satire , Margaret Atwood warns about these directions. I read this book when it was first published. As a reread it recently I was impressed with its warnings about the current directions governments worldwide are taking. I encourage first time readers to get this book as well those who appreciated Atwood' thoughts the first time .

Vanishing Acts
by
Jodi Picoult
Jeanne
, September 02, 2006
Jodi Picoult writes about perspectives, culture, relationships in a fully absorbing story. Once I started this book, I had to keep reading to see what happens next. Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of the Deep End of the Ocean says it best "the author wraps the reader tighter than a spider's silk in the inticracies of the story. Never more gripping is the master plotter than in this, the story of Delia Hopkins." You cannot put it down once you start it.
