Petty: The Biography
by
Warren Zanes
Holly Marie
, January 24, 2018
Having read Zanes’ book will forever color the way I hear Tom Petty’s music. The context in which he places the creation of the songs deepens their meaning – making the sad moments a little sadder and the joyous moments more full of joy. Zanes’ insight into the record industry made me appreciate just what it takes to make great records – and what a rare and beautiful event it is when those records make it onto the radio or into the hands of consumers. While paying tribute to Tom Petty and his band, Zanes maintains an even hand in his storytelling, while also writing a lamentation to the passing of an era – that of the rock ‘n’roll band. It seems nearly miraculous that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were making new music for 40 years and this book is a celebration of that rarity and the sacrifice it took to get there.

Death Comes to Pemberley
by
P D James
Holly Marie
, January 19, 2012
For me, this was the right book at the right time. I needed to be transported to a different place and time and this did the trick. PD James does an outstanding job of throwing Jane Austen's creations into the turmoil of a murder-mystery and using their established characters in a way that felt consistent with Pride and Prejudice and provided a similar platform for social commentary.

Tour de France The History the Legend the Riders
by
Graeme Fife
Holly Marie
, December 05, 2011
This book was and wasn’t what I was hoping for. Fife’s discussion the birth of the Tour and the politics of France at the time is fascinating. His penchant for making comparisons is sometimes amusing and sometimes grating. The blow by blow of each year’s race is a bit less of what I was looking for; I was hoping for a bit more history of the race and discussion of the riders themselves. He is a serious student of the Tour and sometimes forgets, I think, that not all of his readers will be as well-versed as he. Nonetheless, I learned quite a bit about the great bike race. Note: I read the 2010 edition.
