Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Blue Orchard
by
Jackson Taylor

The Blue Orchard is a poignant and compelling historical novel of one woman’s journey through and out of poverty, relationships and historical Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her struggles with motherhood, race relations, an alcoholic, the political machine and well-executed (pun-intended), but illegal abortions provide insight and understanding for these same issues now. As I traverse the Walnut Street and Harvey Taylor bridges, shop at the Broad Street Market, and help at a community breakfast in Allison Hill, I thrill at the deeper geographic understanding that The Blue Orchard provides. Although Harrisburg connections will make the story more personal, this amazing novel, with its empowering, redemptive ending, will touch hearts everywhere.

Gargoyle

The Gargoyle is an amazing journey through Europe of the 1300's and a burn unit, artist's castle, and the sleazy porn world of modern America. Counselor types and Fans of Dante's Inferno will be especially interested in the descent/ascent into/out of addiction. The narrator's odyssey creates a mind-blowing page-turner that you will not want to put down. I was introduced to this book by a Canadian in the Northwest, and only later found out that Davidson is one their own-with the out-of-the-box viewpoint to prove it!

Cold Mountain
by
Charles Frazier

Although it was published in 1997, I just read Cold Mountain last year. The vivid pictures that are created, and heart-wrenching sagas told make this the best book I read in the last decade. The mountain setting and people remind me of the incredible area around the ARE Camp where I spend many summers. I just saw the movie about two weeks ago and think that, although the book is better, the movie does a good job of capturing the spirit of Cold Mountain!
